Passengers boarding Holland America Line’s Zaandam for its June 10 Alaska sailing are expected to begin their vacation exploring some of the region’s most iconic destinations.
Instead, they found themselves caught up in the ongoing fallout from a propulsion system issue that has now affected two consecutive voyages.
The problem first surfaced during the ship’s previous cruise, forcing major itinerary changes and an early return to Vancouver for repairs.
While engineers have spent days working to restore the vessel to full operating capability, the repair process has taken longer than originally anticipated, creating a ripple effect that has now significantly altered the following sailing as well.
Although Holland America says repairs are nearing completion, guests have already lost valuable cruise time, and several headline destinations have disappeared from the schedule.
Delayed Departure Creates Immediate Challenges
Originally, Zaandam was scheduled to leave Vancouver at 4 p.m. on June 10 and begin a weeklong journey through Alaska.
However, repair work on the ship’s propulsion system forced the vessel to remain docked far beyond its planned departure time.
In an update sent to guests, Holland America indicated the ship could depart shortly after midnight once repairs were finalized.
However, cruise tracking data later showed the vessel still alongside the pier well into the following day, suggesting the situation may have required additional work or operational checks before sailing.
Regardless of the exact cause, the extended delay left the cruise line with little choice but to redesign the itinerary.
What caused the disruption?
- Ongoing propulsion system repairs.
- Delayed return from the previous sailing.

- Reduced flexibility in Alaska port schedules.

Alaska Itinerary Receives Major Overhaul
The original voyage was packed with some of Alaska’s most sought-after destinations.
Guests were looking forward to glacier viewing opportunities, scenic fjords, and visits to several of the state’s most popular cruise ports.
Unfortunately, many of those experiences have now been removed from the voyage.
Ports and experiences cancelled:
- Juneau
- Skagway
- Endicott Arm scenic cruising
- Glacier Bay scenic cruising
For many travelers, Glacier Bay and Juneau are among the biggest reasons for booking an Alaska cruise, making the changes particularly disappointing.
Rather than attempting to maintain an unrealistic schedule, Holland America redesigned the voyage around destinations that remain achievable while allowing the ship to return to Vancouver on time.
New Ports Added to the Voyage
While several major attractions were removed, Holland America has introduced alternative experiences to provide guests with a meaningful Alaska vacation.
One of the most notable additions is Wrangell, a smaller and less frequently visited Alaska destination known for its local culture, history, and relaxed atmosphere.
Revised itinerary highlights:
- Scenic cruising along the coast of British Columbia.
- Wrangell, Alaska.
- Ketchikan, Alaska.
- Scenic cruising through Alaska’s Inside Passage.
- Scheduled return to Vancouver.
The cruise line also noted that additional scenic cruising opportunities may be added whenever conditions and scheduling allow.
Although the revised itinerary looks very different from the original plan, guests will still have opportunities to experience Alaska’s coastal scenery and small-town charm.
Compensation Package Announced
Recognizing the scale of the disruption, Holland America Line has introduced a compensation package for affected passengers.
The cruise line is offering both immediate reimbursement and future travel incentives in an effort to make up for the significant itinerary changes.
Compensation includes:
- 50% refund of the cruise fare.
- Future cruise credit is equal to 65% of the cruise fare.
- Automatic refunds for cancelled shore excursions.
- New excursion options for Wrangell.
This compensation package is actually more generous than what was offered to guests on the previous sailing, who received a 50% refund and a future cruise credit worth 50% of their cruise fare.
Guests who booked excursions in cancelled ports will not need to take any action, as refunds will be processed automatically.
Can Zaandam Return to Normal Operations?
For Holland America, the focus now shifts toward ensuring that this becomes the final sailing affected by the propulsion issue.
The ship is scheduled to continue operating Alaska cruises throughout the summer season, and cruise line officials are undoubtedly eager to put the technical problems behind them before additional departures are impacted.
Zaandam remains a popular choice for Alaska travelers due to its smaller size, classic cruise atmosphere, and unique itineraries.
However, repeated propulsion issues have created frustration for guests hoping to experience Alaska’s most famous destinations.
For now, passengers aboard the June 10 sailing will make the best of a revised adventure while engineers work to ensure the ship can resume normal operations for future voyages.
