Sometimes cruise plans line up perfectly… and sometimes Mother Nature rewrites the schedule.
That’s exactly what happened in Nassau this week when Royal Caribbean’s newest mega-ship missed a milestone moment.
A Big Day in Nassau — Without the World’s Newest Mega-Ship
Tuesday, December 23, 2025, was supposed to be a double celebration in Nassau: another call from Utopia of the Seas and the official debut of Royal Caribbean’s first-ever beach club.
Instead, strong winds kept the Oasis-class ship offshore, forcing it to skip the port entirely and miss the opening day of Royal Beach Club Paradise Island.
The ship had been scheduled to dock from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., but conditions simply didn’t cooperate.
Weather Makes the Final Call — Every Time
Even though Utopia of the Seas visits Nassau twice a week, no special occasion overrides safety.
Guests on the 4-night sailing from Port Canaveral reported multiple announcements throughout the morning explaining that high winds made docking unsafe.
According to Windy forecasts at the time:
- Sustained winds were around 22 mph
- Gusts were even stronger near the harbor entrance
For a ship of Utopia’s size, that combination can make precise maneuvering extremely risky.
Why Size Works Against Utopia of the Seas

Bigger ships don’t just need more space — they’re also far more affected by wind.
To put things in perspective:
- Utopia of the Seas: 236,473 gross tons, 18 decks
- Carnival Celebration: 183,500 gross tons, 19 decks
- Disney Wish: 144,000 gross tons, 15 decks
While Carnival Celebration may appear slightly taller depending on draft and waterline, Utopia is:
- Roughly 29% larger overall
- About 64% heavier than Disney Wish
That extra mass means stronger wind resistance and more inertia — exactly what captains want to avoid when threading a massive ship into a busy cruise port.
Recent events only reinforced that caution. Just two days earlier, Celebrity Equinox experienced broken mooring lines, highlighting how quickly things can go wrong when the weather turns unfriendly.
Disappointment Onboard — But No Safety Shortcuts
Missing Nassau, especially on such a hyped day, was understandably frustrating for guests.
Still, Royal Caribbean emphasized a familiar cruise truth:
- The ship’s master makes the final decision
- Guest safety outweighs schedules, promotions, and grand openings
Rather than rushing a risky approach, Utopia of the Seas spent the day at sea.
To soften the blow, the cruise line:
- Added extra activities and entertainment
- Adjusted the daily program
- Directed guests to the Royal Caribbean app for real-time updates
Automatic Refunds for Nassau Plans
Guests who had prepaid for Nassau experiences won’t be left chasing refunds.
Royal Caribbean confirmed that:
- Royal Beach Club Paradise Island passes
- Other Nassau shore excursions
…will be automatically refunded, with no action required from passengers.
Nassau Still Welcomed Other Ships
While Utopia of the Seas stayed offshore, Nassau wasn’t empty by any means.
Five ships successfully docked on December 23:
- Sky Princess
- Carnival Spirit
- Carnival Celebration
- Disney Wish
- Radiance of the Seas
Although some of these ships are among the largest in their fleets, none come close to Utopia’s sheer footprint — a key reason they were able to dock safely.
So… Did the Beach Club Still Open?
Yes — just with a smaller crowd than planned.
Because Radiance of the Seas was in port, Royal Beach Club Paradise Island officially opened as scheduled, welcoming its very first guests from that ship alone.
Royal Caribbean shared a behind-the-scenes preview the day before, showing:
- Brightly colored towels stacked and ready
- Drinks are chilled and lined up
- Dancers rehearsing for opening-day energy
The message was clear: paradise was ready — even if one ship couldn’t make it.
What Royal Beach Club Paradise Island Offers
After 20 months of construction, Royal Caribbean’s newest destination is now officially open.
Highlights of the 17-acre resort include:
- Multiple pools and beachfront areas
- Restaurants and bars
- Wi-Fi access included
- Drink packages built into the pass price
Guests can purchase access as a shore excursion whenever their cruise calls on Nassau.
The ceremonial ribbon cutting took place on December 13, following minor construction delays that canceled an earlier preview event.
More Beach Clubs Are on the Way
Paradise Island is just the first step.
Royal Caribbean has confirmed future beach clubs are in development for:
- Cozumel, Mexico
- Vanuatu
- Santorini, Greece
If Nassau’s opening buzz is any indication, these locations are expected to become major itinerary highlights — assuming the weather cooperates.
