Cruises are meant to create lifelong memories, but sometimes tragedy strikes where it’s least expected.
That’s what happened at the Port of Livorno, Italy, when a routine shuttle maneuver turned deadly.
A Routine Excursion Turns Fatal
- An 83-year-old American woman was killed after being struck by a reversing shuttle bus inside the port.
- Her husband, 84 years old, was also hit and remains hospitalized in critical condition.
- The couple had just returned from a shore excursion and were walking back to their ship when the accident occurred.
Witnesses say the bus driver appeared unaware of the couple until hearing a loud thud and cries for help.
The Cruise Behind the Headlines

Reports suggest the couple were passengers aboard Cunard’s Queen Victoria.
The ship was in Livorno on August 12, 2025, during a 21-night Mediterranean voyage that visited Croatia, Malta, Sardinia, France, and several Italian ports before ending in Barcelona.
The Queen Victoria carries just over 2,000 guests and is known for its traditional British style of cruising — a stark reminder that even classic voyages aren’t immune to unforeseen dangers.
Investigators Step In
Italian police quickly launched an investigation to determine how the accident unfolded.
- Surveillance footage and witness statements are being reviewed.
- The bus driver, described as experienced, was reportedly shaken — especially since he had helped the woman with her walker shortly before the accident.
- Authorities are examining whether blind spots or traffic congestion inside the port played a role.
Livorno’s Growing Cruise Boom

The Port of Livorno isn’t just any stop — it’s one of Italy’s busiest gateways, often used by passengers to reach Florence, Pisa, and Tuscan villages.
📈 By the numbers:
- Over 860,000 cruise guests passed through in 2024 — a 23% jump from the year before.
- Homeport traffic rose to nearly 54,000 passengers.
- Forecasts for 2025 expect a further 25% rise in passenger arrivals and more than 30% growth in ship calls.
With traffic swelling at this pace, the risks of congestion-related accidents may increase, even though serious incidents remain rare.
Not an Isolated Case
Unfortunately, bus-related cruise accidents aren’t unheard of:
- In Barcelona (March 2025), 53 people were injured when a cruise tour bus collided with a student bus.
- In Alaska (late summer 2024), a tour bus overturned with 24 cruise passengers onboard, injuring 12.
These incidents underscore the importance of safety measures in ports worldwide, particularly where thousands of passengers move in and out daily.
A Sobering Reminder
While Queen Victoria and other ships in Livorno continued their itineraries, the lives of one family were changed forever.
Accidents like this highlight how even a dream vacation can take a tragic turn. Our deepest condolences go out to the victims’ loved ones.
👉 Cruise Safety Note: Ports like Livorno are busy transportation hubs. Always be mindful of traffic zones and reversing vehicles when returning from excursions.
