I’ve been to some stunning but risky cruise destinations, and this heartbreaking story from Milos, Greece, really struck me.
It’s a reminder that, as breathtaking as certain spots may be, nature can turn dangerous in an instant.
What Happened at Sarakiniko Beach

On Friday, August 8, 2025, a tragic accident claimed the lives of two Vietnamese cruise passengers — believed to be a married couple in their 50s or 60s — during a shore visit to Sarakiniko Beach on the Greek island of Milos.
- The couple had disembarked earlier that day at Adamas port as part of their cruise itinerary.
- According to Greek authorities, the woman was taking a photo along the exposed northern shoreline when a sudden gust of wind — up to 50 mph (80 km/h) — knocked her off balance and swept her into the water.
- Her husband immediately jumped in to save her, but both were quickly overwhelmed by the turbulent sea conditions.
- Sarakiniko Beach, known for its smooth white volcanic cliffs and lack of vegetation, is especially exposed to high winds, making it deceptively dangerous despite its beauty.
The Greek Coast Guard, aided by private boats and divers, recovered their bodies. They were pronounced dead at a local health centre shortly after.
Official Statements and Warnings
- The Vietnamese Embassy in Greece confirmed the deaths, offered condolences, and said it was assisting the victims’ families with arrangements.
- The embassy urged Vietnamese tourists — and by extension, all visitors — to avoid cliff edges and stay out of the sea during high winds.
The Cruise Connection
While the cruise line was not officially confirmed, it’s believed the couple was sailing on Celestyal Cruises’ Celestyal Journey:
- Ship Details: 55,800 gross tons, formerly Holland America Line’s Ryndam.
- Homeport: Piraeus (Athens), Greece.
- Itinerary: A 7-night Greek Isles voyage, with Milos as the final stop before returning to Athens.
- The tragedy happened during severe weather alerts in southern Greece, with winds reaching up to 88 km/h in parts of the Aegean and Crete.
Wider Impact of the Weather
- Ferry disruptions: Multiple ferry routes between Athens and the Cyclades were canceled or delayed, stranding travelers in Piraeus, Rafina, and Lavrio.
- The Civil Protection Ministry had already issued high wind and wildfire risk warnings.
- Maritime officials stressed that certain beaches should be closed during extreme weather.
Quote from Giorgos Vallis, President of the Panhellenic Association of Yacht Crews:
“When such phenomena occur, port authorities should close off the area to prevent people from taking photos or jumping from the rocks into the sea.”
Cruise Safety Reminder
While cruise lines take extensive steps to protect guests, shore excursions — especially to exposed natural sites — come with inherent risks.
If you’re visiting scenic but dangerous spots like Sarakiniko Beach:
- ✅ Check the local weather forecast before heading out.
- ✅ Avoid cliff edges and slippery rock formations in windy conditions.
- ✅ Stay with organized tour groups that monitor weather changes.
- ✅ Always have a safe route back to shelter if conditions worsen.
This story is a sobering reminder that sometimes, the most Instagram-worthy spots can also be the most dangerous.
When you’re on a cruise, the ship might feel like a bubble of safety — but once you step ashore, nature has the final say.
