Top Free Things to Do at Royal Caribbean’s CocoCay Private Island

When I first booked my Royal Caribbean cruise with a stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay, I was so excited to experience the island.

The idea of a private island with pristine beaches, clear waters, and fun activities seemed like the perfect way to spend a day in paradise.

But as I browsed the options in the Royal Caribbean app, I was quickly taken aback by all the extra charges.

From exclusive beach clubs to the waterpark and even cabana rentals, it felt like everything on the island required an extra payment.

But then, I realized something—I didn’t have to spend a lot of money to have an amazing time on CocoCay.

There were plenty of free things to do that allowed me to enjoy the island to its fullest without breaking the bank.

From relaxing on beautiful beaches to exploring underwater life, there’s so much to enjoy for free.

Relaxing at the Beaches

One of the best things about CocoCay is that it has several beautiful beaches, and the good news is that most of them are completely free to enjoy.

After all, you’re on a private island, so there’s no reason not to take full advantage of these gorgeous stretches of sand.

Harbor Beach – Close to the Cruise Ship

Harbor Beach
Harbor Beach

My first stop was Harbor Beach, which is the closest beach to the pier. It was only about a 5-minute walk from where the ship docked, so I didn’t have to waste any time heading to the beach.

Harbor Beach is great if you want to jump right into the action and enjoy the calm, lagoon-like waters.

It was perfect for swimming, and I even spotted some floating water mats available on a first-come, first-served basis for an extra bit of fun.

What I loved about Harbor Beach is how convenient it was. I was able to walk straight from the cruise ship and have access to Skipper’s Grill, a casual spot right by the beach where I could grab a bite to eat.

It wasn’t too crowded, so I could easily find a lounger and enjoy the sunshine.

Chill Island – A Quiet Spot for Snorkeling

Chill Island Beach

After a few hours at Harbor Beach, I decided to explore Chill Island, located on the island’s eastern side.

It took me about 10 minutes to walk there, and the beach had a totally different vibe. While Harbor Beach was more lively, Chill Island felt more laid-back and perfect for snorkeling.

I brought my own snorkel gear (which is free to use, unlike the rentals), and I explored the rocky areas near the shore where I saw some colorful fish and even a couple of small shipwrecks.

There were plenty of free loungers and umbrellas on Chill Island, so I grabbed one of those and spent some time just soaking up the sun.

The Chill Grill, located nearby, served BBQ and other beachside treats, and it was a nice spot for a quick, free lunch.

South Beach – The Active Spot

South Beach
South Beach

After a relaxing time at Chill Island, I wanted a bit more activity, so I headed to South Beach.

This beach is about a 12-minute walk from the pier, or you can take a 5-minute tram ride (which I chose, since it was a little further).

South Beach has a fun, lively vibe—there’s always something happening here. If you’re into sports, you’ll love the fact that basketball, volleyball, and paddleball courts are set up right on the sand.

The highlight of South Beach, though, is the floating bar. I’d heard about it before my visit, and it didn’t disappoint.

It’s literally a bar in the water, with in-water tables and umbrellas, so you can relax, enjoy a drink, and cool off at the same time.

The Snack Shack is nearby for a quick bite, and I grabbed a burger before heading back into the water.

What I Learned

I was so pleasantly surprised by how much I could do for free on CocoCay.

At Harbor Beach, I had a quick and easy beach experience with access to food and loungers, while Chill Island offered me a peaceful escape with some light snorkeling.

South Beach was perfect for my active side, with plenty of space for sports and an incredible floating bar.

I realized that while there are definitely some premium options on the island, it’s absolutely possible to enjoy CocoCay without spending a lot of extra cash.

The beaches alone provide plenty of opportunities for relaxation, fun, and exploring.

After spending a few hours at the beaches, I was eager to explore more of CocoCay.

I was pleasantly surprised by how many free attractions there were that didn’t require me to spend a dime.

From the Oasis Lagoon Pool to Splashaway Bay for kids, there’s so much to enjoy without any added cost. Here’s what I discovered next during my Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Cool Off in the Oasis Lagoon Pool

Oasis Lagoon Pool
Oasis Lagoon Pool

One of the highlights of my time at CocoCay was definitely the Oasis Lagoon Pool, which is the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean! It’s situated in the center of the island, and it’s completely free to use.

After a day spent at the beach, I couldn’t wait to cool off in this massive pool, which had a beach-style entry—perfect for those who prefer to wade in rather than climb down steps.

What to Expect:

  • Complimentary loungers and umbrellas are available around the pool, so you can relax while staying close to the water.
  • There’s a swim-up bar, which adds a fun, laid-back vibe to the pool area. While drinks are extra, I found that lounging in the pool with a refreshing drink in hand was the perfect way to unwind.
  • The pool is family-friendly, making it ideal for both adults and kids. I loved how easy it was to just float and enjoy the surroundings.

It was the perfect spot to relax, take a dip, and spend time in a cool, refreshing place without spending extra money.

Plus, it’s conveniently located near many of the island’s other attractions.

Play Sports and Games at South Beach and Breezy Bay

For those of us who enjoy a little friendly competition, South Beach and Breezy Bay offer plenty of free sports activities.

I’m a big fan of beach volleyball, and South Beach’s sports courts were the perfect spot for me to indulge in a game.

What to Expect at South Beach:

  • Basketball courts, volleyball courts, and paddleball courts are all free to use.
  • These courts are located right next to Coconut Willie’s Bar, so you can grab a drink or snack in between games.
  • If you’re feeling more relaxed, there are loungers and umbrellas available to enjoy by the water.

I had a great time with a group of fellow cruisers playing volleyball. It was a fun and active way to spend some time while still soaking up the beautiful surroundings.

What to Expect at Breezy Bay:

  • Giant chess, human-sized billiards, and four-square add a bit of variety to the typical beach games.
  • This area is conveniently located behind Oasis Lagoon and next to Chill Island, so it’s easy to swing by between other activities.

These areas were a big hit with my group—everyone enjoyed the variety of games and the relaxed beach vibe.

Splashaway Bay – A Waterpark for Kids (No Extra Cost!)

Splashaway Bay Water Park

If you’re traveling with young kids, Splashaway Bay is an absolute must-visit—and it’s completely free!

Located near the Oasis Lagoon Pool, this water area is designed specifically for younger children with interactive play areas, fountains, and small water slides.

It’s not as intense as the Thrill Waterpark, but for the little ones, it’s the perfect spot to cool off and have fun.

What to Expect:

  • Splash pads, interactive fountains, and small water slides keep kids entertained for hours.
  • It’s a safe environment where the kids can run around and have fun without feeling overwhelmed by bigger attractions.
  • While older kids or teens might find the activities a bit tame, this is a great place for younger kids to splash around and cool off.

I spent a lot of time here watching the kids play, and I must say—it was such a relaxed atmosphere.

Parents can easily unwind nearby while their little ones burn off some energy.

Take a Scenic Walk on the Island’s Trails

If you want to experience CocoCay from a different angle, I highly recommend taking a scenic walk along one of the island’s nature trails.

It’s a quiet, peaceful way to experience the island’s natural beauty, and best of all, it’s free!

What to Expect:

  • As you walk, you’ll pass through lush greenery, palm trees, and discover some wildlife, like iguanas and chickens wandering around.
  • The trail provides a nice shaded escape from the busy areas, offering a quiet, peaceful atmosphere for those looking to slow down and enjoy the surroundings.
  • It’s a great way to explore the island and discover some hidden gems away from the crowds.

I really enjoyed this walk—it felt like a little retreat from the more bustling beach areas, and it gave me a chance to enjoy the tranquility of the island.

Captain Jill’s Galleon: A Fun Play Area for Kids

One of the most charming spots on the island for families is Captain Jill’s Galleon, a shipwreck-themed play area designed for younger children.

This interactive playground is located near the entrance of the island, and it’s the perfect place for kids to enjoy some fun while parents relax nearby.

What to Expect:

  • Water cannons, climbing nets, and other interactive features let kids play and explore at their own pace.
  • It’s perfect for smaller kids who might not be ready for the bigger water activities but still want to have some fun.
  • Conveniently located near the entrance, it’s easy to find and great for a quick stop either at the beginning or end of your day on the island.

I could see families spending some quality time here, letting the kids have their fun while adults take a breather.

Free Lockers and Showers for Convenience

Chill Island

One of the most convenient free services at CocoCay is the availability of complimentary lockers and showers.

If you’re like me and want to spend the day exploring without worrying about your belongings, these amenities are a huge help.

Locker Locations:

  • Between Oasis Lagoon and Up, Up & Away
  • At the entrance of Thrill Waterpark
  • Breezy Bay
  • Chill Island
  • Hideaway Beach

During my visit, I used the lockers near Oasis Lagoon to store my stuff while I explored the island.

They’re easily accessible, and I didn’t have to worry about leaving my valuables behind while having fun in the water.

Enjoy Free Food and Snacks

One of the unexpected delights at CocoCay was the abundance of free food available around the island.

Sure, there are some upscale dining experiences that come with a cost, but there are also plenty of free options to satisfy your hunger without paying extra.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much delicious food I could enjoy at no charge!

Chill Grill: A Tasty BBQ Escape

If you find yourself at Chill Island, make sure to stop by Chill Grill, where you can enjoy a variety of tasty BBQ, tacos, and fresh salads.

This beachside spot offers a relaxed atmosphere for grabbing a quick, satisfying lunch after lounging on the beach.

Snack Shacks: Quick Bites on the Go

I couldn’t resist checking out the Snack Shacks scattered around CocoCay, located near Oasis Lagoon, South Beach, and Thrill Waterpark.

They offer:

  • Hot dogs
  • Burgers
  • Fried chicken sandwiches
  • Mozzarella sticks
  • Salads
  • Cookies

One of the hidden gems on the menu is their secret chicken parm sandwich, which is essentially a chicken sandwich with marinara sauce and mozzarella sticks—definitely a must-try!

For dessert, you can even indulge in fresh funnel cakes to satisfy your sweet cravings.

Skipper’s Grill: Beachside BBQ Bliss

Another free food spot is Skipper’s Grill, located at Harbor Beach. Here, I enjoyed a BBQ buffet with tacos, salads, and even fresh fruit.

It’s a great place to refuel while enjoying the stunning view of the beach.

Now that you know about the amazing free activities, here are some tips that helped me make the most of my time at CocoCay:

Pack Light

When you’re heading to the island, bring just the essentials:

  • Towel, reef-safe sunscreen, hat, cover-up, sandals, SeaPass card, waterproof phone pouch, reusable water bottle, and snorkel gear (if you plan to snorkel).

Keeping things simple will allow you to move around easily without the extra weight.

Use Your Drink Package on the Island

If you’ve purchased a Royal Caribbean beverage package, it works on CocoCay as well!

I was able to enjoy my favorite drinks at the bars and dining areas on the island without any additional charges, which was a great perk.

Get the Best Spots by Arriving Early

If you want to grab the best loungers with umbrellas or a hammock, try to disembark early once the ship docks.

Popular spots fill up quickly, so getting there early ensures you can pick your ideal spot on the beach or by the pool.

Stay Hydrated and Energized

With the Caribbean sun beating down, it’s important to stay hydrated. I made sure to visit the free filtered water stations and flavored water dispensers scattered around CocoCay.

You can fill up your reusable water bottle at no extra cost, keeping you refreshed throughout the day.

Store Your Belongings in Free Lockers

Don’t forget to take advantage of the free lockers available to store your belongings while you enjoy the beach, pool, or water activities.

It’s one less thing to worry about during your time at CocoCay.

Towel Exchange is Available

Did you forget your towel? Don’t worry! There are towel exchange stations throughout CocoCay where you can easily swap out your used towel for a fresh one, so you don’t have to carry a sandy towel all day.

Final Thoughts

I was so impressed with how much I could do on CocoCay without spending extra money.

From lounging at the Oasis Lagoon Pool to enjoying free food at the Snack Shacks and Chill Grill, I was able to have an amazing time without feeling the need to splurge.

The complimentary amenities—like lockers, showers, and water stations—were the icing on the cake, ensuring a comfortable and stress-free day.

Whether you’re looking to relax, play sports, or explore nature, CocoCay offers a Perfect Day without any extra costs.

It’s the ideal way to enjoy the Bahamas on your Royal Caribbean cruise without the worry of hidden fees.
