Thieves Steal 17 Cars from Cruise Terminal Parking Lot

Parking your car at the cruise terminal is meant to give you peace of mind—close to the ship, quick to access, and convenient when you return from your holiday.

But for a group of unlucky travelers in Southampton, that convenience turned into a nightmare.

On September 9 and 10, 2025, 17 vehicles were stolen from a parking facility that promotes itself as “secure” and “indoor.”

The scale of the theft has stunned local passengers and raised serious questions about how such a large operation could take place undetected.

The Daily Echo confirmed the theft, though details such as the car models and owners are being kept under wraps due to the ongoing investigation.

What is clear, however, is that multiple families or individuals disembarking from their cruises came back to an empty space where their cars should have been.

A “Secure” Parking Lot That Wasn’t

The theft took place at Southampton Cruise Parking Services, located on First Avenue in Millbrook.

This facility has long advertised itself as one of the safest options for cruise passengers, highlighting features such as:

  • Indoor parking in a locked warehouse
  • 24-hour surveillance with CCTV monitoring
  • Staff on site and shuttle transfers directly to the cruise terminal, just 5 minutes away
  • A bold guarantee on their website stating: “Your car will not leave our premises.”

And yet, 17 vehicles managed to leave—just not in the hands of their rightful owners.

At this point, it’s still unclear how the thieves managed to pull off such a large-scale operation without drawing attention.

The breach of security has left many travelers shaken and wondering just how effective these so-called “guarantees” really are.

The parking company itself has not issued an official statement, but it’s safe to assume that its security procedures are now under heavy review.

Which Cruise Guests Were Impacted?

Southampton is one of the busiest cruise homeports in the world, so when something like this happens, it doesn’t just affect a handful of travelers—it potentially spans across multiple cruise lines and sailings.

During the days of the theft (September 9–10, 2025), a wide range of ships were in port, including:

  • Celebrity Cruises – Celebrity Apex
  • Cunard Line – Queen Anne, Queen Mary 2
  • Disney Cruise Line – Disney Fantasy
  • MSC Cruises – MSC Virtuosa
  • Norwegian Cruise Line – Norwegian Dawn
  • P&O Cruises – Arcadia, Aurora, Iona, Ventura
  • Princess Cruises – Regal Princess
  • Royal Caribbean International – Independence of the Seas
  • Silversea – Silver Dawn

With so many ships departing and arriving, it’s impossible to say exactly which passengers were impacted.

What is clear is that dozens of families returned from their holiday expecting to collect their cars and instead faced a nightmare.

It’s also worth stressing that the cruise lines themselves are not responsible for the thefts.

The parking facility is operated independently, so guests will have to work with local authorities, the parking provider, and their own insurance companies for resolution.

The Bigger Picture – Security & Liability

For many people, booking an “official” cruise parking service comes with an expectation of safety and peace of mind.

After all, facilities like Southampton Cruise Parking Services advertise themselves as “indoor and secure,” with locked warehouses, 24/7 CCTV, and even a guarantee that your car won’t leave the premises.

That’s why this theft is so shocking. If 17 vehicles can vanish from a supposedly secure lot, it raises questions about how the thieves gained access, whether security procedures were followed, and whether staff or internal failings played a role.

Unfortunately, in most cases, the risk is still on the traveler. Parking companies often include disclaimers in their terms and conditions that limit their liability in cases of theft or damage.

This means many victims will need to rely heavily on their personal insurance, regardless of the lot’s promises.

We’ve seen similar incidents before—for example, in Norfolk, Virginia (2022), where dozens of cruise guest cars were vandalized despite “round-the-clock security.”

The city wasn’t held responsible, and travelers were left to work things out with their insurers.

For anyone cruising from Southampton (or any port), this incident is a harsh reminder: even at “secure” facilities, there’s always a risk.

Part 5: How Travelers Can Protect Their Cars in Cruise Parking Lots

While large-scale thefts like the one in Southampton are rare, there are still smart steps every cruiser can take to reduce risks when leaving their car for days—or even weeks—at a terminal.

From my own experience, a little preparation goes a long way:

  • Remove all valuables – Don’t leave laptops, handbags, sunglasses, or even loose change in view. If you must bring items, store them out of sight in the boot.
  • Double-check locks and windows – It sounds obvious, but in the rush of boarding day, it’s easy to forget. Always take a moment to confirm everything is locked and sealed.
  • Take photos of your car – Snap pictures of your vehicle after parking. This helps prove its condition (and that it was there) if you need to make an insurance claim later.
  • Keep your keys secure – Only hand over keys to trusted parking companies. Some budget lots require you to leave them, while others let you keep them with you.
  • Check insurance coverage – Before your trip, confirm your policy includes coverage for theft or damage while parked in a third-party facility.
  • Book early at reputable lots – Popular secure lots fill quickly, and last-minute alternatives may be less reliable.

These steps won’t stop a determined thief, but they’ll give you better protection—and more peace of mind—while you’re enjoying your cruise.
