One of the biggest advantages of cruising the Mediterranean is the chance to wake up in a different historic city almost every day.
But during the busy summer season, some of Europe’s most famous cruise ports can become so crowded that cruise lines are forced to rethink their plans.
That’s exactly what has happened to one upcoming Princess Cruises sailing.
Guests booked aboard Sun Princess for an August 2026 voyage have been informed that one of the cruise’s most anticipated Greek ports has been removed from the itinerary.
Instead, passengers will now spend the day exploring a completely different country.
While no cruise traveler likes seeing a favorite destination disappear, Princess says the change is intended to provide a better overall guest experience by avoiding one of the Mediterranean’s busiest port days.
Corfu Is No Longer on the Schedule
Princess Cruises has notified guests sailing on Sun Princess’s August 22, 2026 departure that the ship will no longer visit Corfu, Greece, as originally planned.
Instead, the cruise will call at Taranto, Italy, on the same day.
According to the cruise line, the decision was made because of expected cruise ship congestion in Corfu.
Rather than bringing thousands of additional passengers into an already crowded destination, Princess opted to replace the stop with an alternative port that can comfortably accommodate the ship.
For passengers, that means swapping one historic Mediterranean destination for another.
The Rest of the Cruise Stays the Same
Fortunately, the itinerary hasn’t been completely reshaped.
The only change affects the August 26 port call.
Everything else about the seven-night voyage remains unchanged.
Passengers will still enjoy visits to:
- Santorini, Greece
- Montenegro
- Sicily, Italy
The cruise will also continue ending in Barcelona, Spain, on August 29 as originally planned.
So while one destination has changed, the overall structure of the Mediterranean itinerary remains intact.
Why Princess Cruises Made the Change
At first glance, cancelling a popular destination like Corfu may seem surprising.
However, looking at the port schedule quickly explains why.
August 26 is expected to be one of the busiest cruise days of the season for the Greek island.
According to current schedules, seven cruise ships are expected to visit Corfu on the same day.
Those ships include:
- Sun Princess
- Viking Star
- Norwegian Pearl
- Norwegian Gem
- Mein Schiff 4
- MSC Armonia
- MSC Fantasia
Combined, they could bring more than 17,500 cruise passengers ashore within just a few hours.
For a destination that already attracts large numbers of independent tourists during the summer, that’s a tremendous amount of additional visitors arriving at once.
Sun Princess Would Have Been the Largest Ship There
Among all the ships scheduled for Corfu that day, Sun Princess stands out for one important reason.
The 175,500-gross-ton Sphere-class ship is one of the largest vessels in Princess Cruises’ fleet and can carry more than 4,300 guests when sailing at full capacity.
That means roughly one-quarter of all cruise passengers expected in Corfu that day would have arrived aboard a single ship.
By removing Sun Princess from the schedule, Princess Cruises dramatically reduces the pressure on local infrastructure while improving the experience for passengers aboard the remaining ships.
It’s a decision that may disappoint some travelers, but it also helps avoid overcrowded streets, long attraction lines, and transportation bottlenecks.
What Happens to Shore Excursions?
Passengers who booked shore excursions through Princess Cruises don’t need to worry about handling cancellations themselves.
The cruise line says all excursions purchased for Corfu will automatically be:

- Refunded to the original payment method
Princess also plans to release a new selection of shore excursions for Taranto before the sailing begins.
Guests who booked independent tours outside the cruise line should contact those operators directly regarding cancellation policies or possible refunds.

Although many passengers originally looked forward to Corfu’s beaches and Venetian architecture, Taranto offers a completely different side of the Mediterranean.
