A deeply disturbing allegation aboard a Carnival cruise has led to criminal charges against two stepbrothers, after investigators say a woman was deceived during a sexual encounter while the ship sailed in the Bahamas.
Alleged Incident Unfolds Aboard Carnival Sunrise
According to police in the Bahamas, a 25-year-old woman from Miami, Florida, reported that she consented to sex with one man — only to later discover she had been with someone else entirely.
The incident allegedly occurred onboard Carnival Sunrise, after the ship departed Eleuthera on December 15.
The woman told authorities she had gone to a cabin with Sayjuan Readous, 26, after meeting him earlier on the cruise.
What the Woman Told Investigators
According to her statement, the woman said she:
- Met Readous while cruising with her family
- Spent time talking, sharing drinks, and building a romantic connection
- Exchanged phone numbers with him
- Later went back to his cabin
She reported that after arriving in the cabin:
- Readous left briefly, saying he needed to run an errand
- She fell asleep in the darkened room
When she later woke up, she believed Readous had returned, and sexual activity occurred.
A Shocking Discovery After the Lights Came On
The situation allegedly took a terrifying turn when the woman turned on the lights.
According to a police source cited in reports:
- She realized the man in bed was not Readous
- Instead, it was his stepbrother, Antoine Flowers Jr., 28
Investigators believe that while the woman was asleep:
- Readous slipped out of the cabin
- Flowers entered the room and took his place
Authorities allege the woman was unaware of the switch until after the encounter had already happened.
Screams Alert Ship Staff
Carnival staff were alerted to the situation after reports of screaming came from an eighth-deck cabin.
When crew members responded, they reportedly found:
- The woman was partially dressed
- In distress
She was immediately examined by a shipboard doctor. The following morning, when the ship docked in Nassau, Bahamian police boarded the vessel and arrested both men.
Charges Filed in Bahamian Court
Both men, who are from Detroit, appeared in court on Monday, facing serious charges.
Legal status:
- Sayjuan Readous (26): Charged with rape and abetment to rape
- Antoine Flowers Jr. (28): Charged with rape
They were:
- Remanded into custody
- Denied bail by Abigail Farrington
- Scheduled to return to court on March 26
According to reports, Readous told police the encounter was consensual, while Flowers declined to comment.
Carnival Cruise Line Responds
In a statement, a spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Line said the company acted immediately once alerted:
“After being notified of an alleged assault involving a guest, our onboard team immediately conducted a medical evaluation, collected evidence, and provided support to the guest.
The matter has been turned over to law enforcement authorities in the Bahamas, and we will defer to their investigation for any further comment.”
