Royal Caribbean has just revealed the newest (and arguably cutest) crew member joining its upcoming mega ship, Legend of the Seas.
Her name is Skipper — a golden retriever puppy who will soon take on the important role of Chief Dog Officer.
For cruise fans like us at ShipboardCruiser.com, this is one of those stories that reminds you cruising isn’t just about ships and destinations — it’s also about personality, tradition, and fun moments that make the experience unforgettable.
A New Chief Dog Officer Joins the Fleet

Skipper was born in early February 2026 and was officially introduced by Royal Caribbean President and CEO Michael Bayley.
After reviewing countless name suggestions, Bayley personally selected “Skipper” as the perfect fit for the cruise line’s growing team of canine ambassadors.
She becomes the third Chief Dog Officer in Royal Caribbean’s fleet, joining her well-known predecessors, Rover and Sailor — both of whom have become fan favorites among guests and crew.
Unlike some ship mascots that join later, Skipper will begin her duties while the ship is still sailing in Europe, rather than waiting for its U.S. debut.
Skipper’s First Home: Legend of the Seas
Skipper will serve onboard Royal Caribbean’s newest Icon-class cruise ship, Legend of the Seas, which is currently under construction in Finland.
The ship’s first cruise is scheduled for July 4, 2026, departing from Rome (Civitavecchia) on a 7-night Mediterranean sailing. Guests will visit popular ports such as:
- Barcelona, Spain
- Marseille, France
- Palma de Mallorca, Spain
- Florence (La Spezia), Italy
Legend of the Seas will continue operating Mediterranean cruises through October 2026 before crossing the Atlantic to begin Caribbean sailings from Fort Lauderdale.
When fully operational, the massive ship will feature:
- 250,800 gross tons.
- Capacity for up to 7,600 guests.
- Over 2,300 crew members.
- And, of course, one very special four-legged officer.
Skipper Will Make History Too
One exciting milestone already planned for Skipper is her first transatlantic voyage.
When Legend of the Seas relocates from Europe to Florida in October 2026, Skipper will become the first Chief Dog Officer to complete a transatlantic crossing — officially making cruise history in her first year of service.
What Does a Chief Dog Officer Actually Do?

While the title might sound playful, Chief Dog Officers serve an important role in enhancing the onboard experience.
Skipper’s responsibilities will include:
- Greeting guests and posing for photos.
- Visiting public spaces around the ship.
- Boosting crew morale.
- Appearing at special onboard events.
- Simply spreading joy and creating memorable moments.
In many ways, these dogs become unofficial celebrities at sea, with guests often spotting them throughout the ship.
Why Guests Love Royal Caribbean’s Chief Dog Officers
Royal Caribbean first introduced this concept as a way to bring more warmth and personality onboard, and it has been incredibly successful.
Guests love the unexpected moments — seeing a golden retriever walking near the bridge, relaxing in public areas, or simply brightening someone’s day.
It’s small touches like this that make modern cruise ships feel more human — even when they carry thousands of passengers.
A Legendary Career Awaits
As Legend of the Seas prepares for her debut, Skipper will soon step into her new role and begin her journey around the world.
From the Mediterranean to the Caribbean and beyond, she’s set to become one of the most beloved crew members onboard.
And if history is any indication, guests sailing on Legend of the Seas will be just as excited to meet Skipper as they are to experience the ship itself.
