Royal Caribbean is expanding one of its most heartwarming traditions at sea with the introduction of a brand-new furry crew member.
The cruise line has officially confirmed that a female golden retriever puppy will serve as the third “Chief Dog Officer” aboard its upcoming ship, Legend of the Seas.
This adorable recruit will follow in the paw prints of Rover and Sailor — the beloved canine ambassadors already serving aboard Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas.
Royal Caribbean President and CEO Michael Bayley shared the exciting announcement on social media, posting a charming photo of the puppy and teasing fans with the message: “A Legend has been born, and she is as cute as cute can be!”
The Puppy’s Name Is Still a Mystery
One detail Royal Caribbean hasn’t revealed yet is the puppy’s name — and that mystery has sparked plenty of excitement among cruise fans.
Guests and followers have already suggested creative and nautical-inspired names, including:
- Siren – Inspired by legendary sea mythology.
- Coco – A tribute to Perfect Day at CocoCay.
- Skipper – A classic maritime title.
- Schooner – Continuing the nautical theme.
- Athena – Named after the powerful mythological figure.
- Helen – Referencing Helen of Troy.
- Noci – A playful reverse spelling of “Icon.”
Royal Caribbean has encouraged fans to continue submitting name suggestions, building anticipation ahead of the official reveal.
What Is a Chief Dog Officer?
The Chief Dog Officer role has quickly become one of Royal Caribbean’s most unique and beloved traditions.
These canine crew members serve several important — and adorable — functions onboard:
- Providing emotional comfort and companionship to crew members.
- Meeting guests and posing for photos.
- Taking daily walks around the ship.
- Serving as social media stars and brand ambassadors.
Passengers frequently share photos and videos of these dogs, making them internet celebrities and a highlight of the cruise experience.
The program first launched in 2024 with Rover aboard Icon of the Seas, and its success led to Sailor joining Star of the Seas.
When Will the Puppy Join Legend of the Seas?

The new Chief Dog Officer is expected to officially join Legend of the Seas around the time of its maiden voyage in summer 2026.
Key details include:
- Ship maiden voyage: July 2026.
- Departure location: Rome.
- Initial itinerary: 7-night Western Mediterranean cruise.
- Future homeport: Fort Lauderdale.
However, the puppy may not join immediately due to international pet travel regulations and training requirements.
Royal Caribbean may introduce her later in the year when the ship begins sailing from Fort Lauderdale.
At the time of the maiden voyage, the puppy will be approximately five months old — an ideal age to begin adapting to her new life at sea.
Continuing a Popular Cruise Line Tradition
Royal Caribbean’s Chief Dog Officer initiative has become a major hit with guests and crew alike.
These friendly golden retrievers help create a welcoming atmosphere onboard and reinforce the cruise line’s focus on family-friendly experiences.
The newest puppy will eventually:
- Interact with passengers daily.
- Appear in ship events and activities.
- Continue building Royal Caribbean’s unique onboard culture.
- Become part of the Icon Class ships’ signature experience.
A Unique Feature That Sets Royal Caribbean Apart
As Royal Caribbean prepares to launch Legend of the Seas, the addition of its newest Chief Dog Officer highlights the cruise line’s commitment to creating memorable and emotional connections with guests.
While innovative attractions, massive ships, and new destinations attract attention, it’s often these small — and furry — touches that passengers remember most.
Cruise fans can expect the puppy’s official name announcement and debut schedule to be revealed closer to the ship’s launch, adding even more excitement ahead of Legend of the Seas’ highly anticipated arrival in 2026.
