Guests sailing aboard Royal Caribbean’s massive Star of the Seas recently noticed something unusual inside one of the ship’s most famous attractions — a giant glass panel inside the AquaDome had suddenly shattered.
The incident quickly caught attention online after passengers shared photos of the cracked panel on social media, especially because the Icon-class mega ship only entered service in August 2025.
For many cruisers, seeing visible damage on such a new vessel came as a surprise.
Thankfully, despite the dramatic appearance of the broken glass, there were no reports of injuries or immediate danger to guests onboard.
Guests Spot Damage Inside the AquaDome
The damaged section was discovered inside the AquaDome, the enormous glass-covered neighborhood located high above the front of the ship.
During the daytime, the space is designed to feel peaceful and relaxing, while at night it transforms into one of the ship’s biggest entertainment venues with shows, music, bars, and ocean views.
One passenger posted photos online on May 26, 2026, joking that someone must have already broken the dome despite the ship being less than a year old.
But the exact reason behind the shattered panel still remains unclear.
There are actually several possible explanations for this type of breakage on cruise ships, including:
- Sudden temperature shifts.
- Structural stress on the glass.
- Heavy weather or strong sea conditions.
- Manufacturing defects.
- Impact from external objects or birds.
- Pressure changes while sailing.
At the moment, Royal Caribbean has not publicly confirmed what caused the damage.
The Good News: Nobody Was Hurt
Even though the cracked panel looked alarming in photos, the safety glass appears to have done exactly what it was designed to do.
Instead of collapsing outward, the shattered pieces stayed contained within the frame, preventing glass from falling into the guest areas below.
Crew members were expected to block off the nearby section until repairs could be completed.
That’s especially important on a ship the size of Star of the Seas, which can carry more than 5,600 passengers at full capacity during its weeklong Caribbean cruises from Port Canaveral.
For many guests onboard, the situation ended up being more shocking than dangerous.
Not the First Glass Problem on Star of the Seas
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Royal Caribbean’s newest Icon-class ship has dealt with glass-related issues.
Before the vessel even officially launched in 2025, another glass panel shattered during a preview sailing.
That earlier incident happened near Deck 15, where a safety barrier suddenly cracked and had to be blocked off with temporary barriers while repairs were made.
Again, nobody was injured — but it certainly got passengers talking.
And the problems didn’t stop there.
Around the same time, Royal Caribbean was also dealing with issues involving the “Frightening Bolt” waterslide onboard both Star of the Seas and sister ship Icon of the Seas.
The slide temporarily closed after an acrylic panel reportedly shattered during a ride onboard Icon of the Seas in August 2025.
Because both ships use nearly identical slide designs, Royal Caribbean decided to shut down the attraction on Star of the Seas as a precaution while inspections were carried out.
Royal Caribbean Has Seen Multiple Glass Incidents Recently
What’s making this latest situation stand out even more is how many similar incidents Royal Caribbean ships have experienced recently.
Over the past year alone, there have been several reports involving broken glass panels across the fleet, including:
- A shattered panel in the Windjammer Marketplace on Utopia of the Seas.
- Broken glass inside the adults-only Solarium on Symphony of the Seas.
- Another panel breaking near the zip line area onboard Symphony.
- A Coastal Kitchen glass incident that reportedly came dangerously close to guests.
In one case, crew members reacted so quickly that passengers were moved away from the area seconds before the glass reportedly came down.
While occasional glass breakage can happen on modern cruise ships, especially with massive panoramic structures exposed to weather and movement at sea, Royal Caribbean has certainly experienced more incidents than usual recently.
Why the AquaDome Is Such a Big Deal
Part of the reason this latest break gained so much attention is that the AquaDome is one of the signature features of the entire Icon-class design.
The futuristic dome is made up of hundreds of glass panels and serves as one of the ship’s visual centerpieces.
During the day, cruisers use the area to relax while enjoying panoramic ocean views.
At night, it becomes home to high-tech AquaShows, restaurants, lounges, and live entertainment.
Because the space is such a major attraction onboard, even minor damage becomes highly noticeable to guests.
Cruise Continues as Normal
Despite the shattered panel, there has been no indication that the incident affected the ship’s itinerary or onboard operations.
Star of the Seas continues sailing its 7-night Caribbean itineraries from Port Canaveral, visiting destinations including:
- Perfect Day at CocoCay
- St. Thomas
- St. Maarten
- Other Eastern and Western Caribbean ports, depending on the sailing
Royal Caribbean has not announced any wider concerns related to the AquaDome structure, and the cruise line is expected to replace the damaged panel during routine maintenance.
For now, most passengers onboard seem to view the incident as more of a surprising vacation story than a serious onboard problem — though it’s definitely another strange chapter in Royal Caribbean’s recent run of glass-related mishaps.
