What started as a calm sea day quickly turned into a real-life rescue mission for guests aboard Radiance of the Seas.
On Sunday, February 15, 2026, the Royal Caribbean ship spotted a small vessel in distress west of Cuba — and without hesitation, changed course to help.
Small Boat Spotted Taking on Water

Passengers later shared online that the scene unfolded around 4:45 p.m. local time.
From the decks of the 90,090-gross-ton ship, guests could see individuals in a small craft desperately bailing water as the boat struggled to stay afloat.
Tracking data shows Radiance slightly backtracked along her route to position herself safely for the rescue.
About an hour after the initial sighting:
- The ship’s pilot boat was launched.
- The crew reached the struggling vessel.
- All six individuals were safely brought onboard.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Where Did the Boat Come From?
While authorities have not confirmed the origin of the small craft, the ship was positioned west of Cuba at the time, making Cuba the likely point of departure.
This region has unfortunately seen similar rescue situations before. In fact, almost exactly one year earlier, Radiance’s sister ship Brilliance of the Seas performed a nearly identical rescue in the same waters.
Winter months — outside of hurricane season — often see calmer seas, which sometimes lead to dangerous attempts to cross open water in small, makeshift boats.
What Happens After a Rescue at Sea?

Cruise ships are legally obligated to assist anyone in distress under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).
Once rescued, standard procedure includes:
- Providing food and fresh water.
- Offering medical evaluation and care if needed.
- Notifying appropriate maritime authorities.
In this case, the captain confirmed the six individuals will be transferred to authorities in Grand Cayman, the ship’s next port of call, on February 16.
Rescued individuals remain in restricted crew areas for safety and security reasons. They are not treated as prisoners, but they are not allowed access to guest amenities either.
No Itinerary Changes Expected
Radiance of the Seas is currently sailing a 6-night itinerary that departed Fort Lauderdale on February 14.
Upcoming ports include:
- Grand Cayman
- Cozumel
- Return to Fort Lauderdale on February 20
At this time, no itinerary disruptions are expected due to the rescue.
With a capacity of 2,501 guests at double occupancy, the ship was able to safely continue its journey after completing the humanitarian operation.
When Cruise Ships Become First Responders
While cruise vacations are typically associated with pool decks and tropical ports, moments like this are reminders that cruise ships are also large, well-equipped vessels capable of responding to maritime emergencies.
A brief diversion may feel inconvenient — but when lives are at risk, stopping to help isn’t optional. It’s the law, and more importantly, it’s the right thing to do.
For guests onboard, it was likely a sobering but powerful moment — witnessing firsthand how quickly a relaxing sea day can turn into a life-saving mission.
