If you love sailing through the Southern Caribbean, there’s some exciting news on the horizon.
Princess Cruises has just revealed a major update to its Caribbean cruise plans, giving travelers a brand-new option when choosing where their cruise begins.
Starting in the 2027 and 2028 cruise seasons, Princess will introduce Barbados as a new homeport, allowing guests to begin their cruise directly from the island.
This adds another convenient departure option alongside the cruise line’s existing sailings from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
For many travelers, especially those flying in from Europe or the UK, having more embarkation options in the Caribbean can make planning a cruise vacation much easier.
Crown Princess and Emerald Princess Will Sail the New Routes

Two well-known ships from the Princess fleet will operate these new Southern Caribbean sailings.
The cruise line confirmed that Crown Princess and Emerald Princess will be based in the region during different parts of the season, offering travelers plenty of opportunities to explore multiple Caribbean islands.
Here’s how the deployment will work:
Crown Princess
- Sailing January through March 2027.
- Round-trip cruises departing from San Juan and Barbados.
Emerald Princess
- Sailing November 2027 through March 2028.
- Round-trip cruises departing from both Caribbean homeports.
Together, the ships will operate more than 30 cruises in the region, offering a wide range of island combinations throughout the season.
Barbados Returns as a Princess Cruise Homeport
One of the most interesting parts of this announcement is the return of Barbados as a departure port for Princess Cruises.
It has actually been quite a while since the cruise line offered cruises starting from the island. In fact, Princess hasn’t operated cruises from Barbados since 2010.
Bringing Barbados back as a homeport gives guests an exciting new way to begin their Caribbean vacation.
There are several reasons why Barbados is a popular starting point for cruises:
- Easy access to the Southern Caribbean islands.
- Well-developed cruise infrastructure.
- Excellent international flight connections.
- Beautiful beaches and attractions for pre-cruise stays.
Many cruisers also enjoy arriving a few days early to explore the island before boarding their ship.
More Than 15 Caribbean Ports Included in the Itineraries
Princess Cruises designed these new sailings to highlight some of the most scenic and diverse destinations across the Southern Caribbean.
Throughout the season, guests will visit 15 different ports, with each cruise offering a slightly different mix of islands.
Some of the destinations included in the itineraries are:
- Antigua
- Dominica
- Grenada
- Martinique
- St. Lucia
- St. Kitts
- St. Maarten
- Tortola
Each island offers its own unique personality. Some are known for lush volcanic landscapes, while others are famous for crystal-clear beaches, colorful towns, and vibrant Caribbean culture.
For cruisers who enjoy exploring multiple destinations in one trip, these itineraries offer a great balance between popular hotspots and quieter island escapes.
Holiday Cruises Also Included in the Schedule

Travelers who enjoy cruising during the festive season will also have a special option available.
The Emerald Princess winter schedule will include both Christmas and New Year’s sailings, giving guests the chance to celebrate the holidays while island hopping through the Caribbean.
Holiday cruises are often popular because they combine:
- Festive onboard decorations
- Special holiday dinners
- Themed entertainment
- Warm tropical weather
Spending Christmas or New Year’s Day in a Caribbean port is something many cruisers say becomes a truly memorable experience.
More Convenient Options for International Travelers
The addition of Barbados as a homeport also makes these cruises more convenient for travelers coming from overseas.
According to Princess Cruises leadership, the expanded departure options are designed to give guests greater flexibility when planning their vacations.
Eithne Williamson, Vice President for Princess Cruises in the UK, Ireland, and the EMEA region, explained that the new departure port will add more variety to the cruise line’s Caribbean offerings.
She noted that the Southern Caribbean itineraries combine both well-known destinations and lesser-visited islands, giving travelers a richer experience of the region.
The itineraries include everything from the dramatic landscapes of St. Lucia to the relaxed atmosphere of islands like Tortola, all while maintaining the service standards Princess Cruises is known for.
Why the Southern Caribbean Is So Popular With Cruisers
For many cruise fans, the Southern Caribbean offers some of the most beautiful destinations in the region.
Unlike the Western or Eastern Caribbean, these itineraries tend to focus on islands that are slightly farther south, which often means:
- Less crowded ports.
- More unique cultures and languages.
- Diverse landscapes and ecosystems.
- Incredible snorkeling and diving spots.
Destinations like Grenada and Dominica, for example, are famous for their rainforests and waterfalls, while islands like St. Maarten and Antigua are known for their lively beach scenes and vibrant waterfront towns.
This mix of experiences is one reason Southern Caribbean cruises are often considered a favorite among repeat cruisers.
Bookings Are Already Open for These Sailings
Princess Cruises has confirmed that these newly announced itineraries are already open for reservations, giving travelers plenty of time to plan ahead.
Cruise fans interested in sailing from San Juan or Barbados during the 2027–2028 season can now start exploring the available itineraries and selecting their preferred departure dates.
With more than 30 cruises scheduled, there will be plenty of options for travelers looking to explore the Caribbean’s southern islands.
