If you live anywhere near Philadelphia and you’ve ever dreamed of cruising without hopping a flight to Florida, here’s some exciting news: after more than a decade, the city is finally getting a major cruise port again.
Construction has officially kicked off on the brand-new PhilaPort Cruise Terminal, and if everything stays on track, Norwegian Cruise Line passengers will be walking up its gangways starting April 2026.
For longtime cruisers in the Mid-Atlantic region, this feels like a huge win.
Philly hasn’t had a consistent cruise presence in years, and the return of a full-scale terminal means easier vacations, new homeport options, and a fresh spark of tourism for the city.
Norwegian Cruise Line Makes the First Move

One of the most exciting parts of this announcement is that Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is leading the charge.
Their very first Jewel-class ship, Norwegian Jewel, will sail from Philadelphia beginning April 16, 2026.
If you’ve ever sailed on Jewel before, you already know she’s the perfect mid-sized ship — big enough to feel lively and full of dining options, but small enough to navigate easily without getting lost on Deck 7 every five minutes.
The ship carries 2,376 passengers and first debuted in 2005, though she’s been updated over the years.
What Itineraries Will Look Like
Southeastern Pennsylvania residents are in luck: Norwegian Jewel will operate 7-day round-trip cruises throughout the summer with a dreamy itinerary:
- Sailings from Philadelphia
- Overnight stays in King’s Wharf, Bermuda
- An additional port stop in Charleston, South Carolina
For anyone who has visited Bermuda on a cruise, you know that an overnight stay is pure gold.
You get enough time to explore Horseshoe Bay, enjoy dinner ashore, and still make it back for the ship’s late-night entertainment.
NCL is also offering a special 9-day sailing on August 27, 2026, giving guests three full days in Bermuda — the type of itinerary that usually requires flying to the island or sailing from a farther-away port.
After wrapping up its Philadelphia season, Norwegian Jewel will shift to PortMiami in November 2026 and then head across the Atlantic in spring 2027.
Inside Philadelphia’s New Cruise Terminal

With cruising making a comeback in the region, PhilaPort and NCL have signed a 7-year berthing agreement that includes an initial commitment of 41 sailings per year.
That’s a substantial start for a city that’s been out of the cruise game for more than a decade.
Who’s Building What?
The construction responsibilities are split:
- Norwegian Cruise Line is handling everything on the land side, from passenger facilities to processing areas.
- PhilaPort is taking charge of the waterfront, including berthing infrastructure and marine operations.
The terminal is strategically located near Philadelphia International Airport, which instantly makes it easier for travelers flying in — and for locals, it finally creates a true “drive-to” port option in the Mid-Atlantic beyond Baltimore and New York.
Local Economic Impact
PhilaPort estimates the project will generate:
- 2,185 new jobs
- Roughly $300 million in annual revenue for the surrounding area
That’s a major economic boost, especially during a milestone year. The cruise terminal’s grand opening lines up perfectly with the 250th birthday celebration of the United States in 2026, which means Philadelphia will likely be buzzing with visitors from all over.
NCL Shares Their Excitement
NCL’s president, David J. Herrera, summed up the cruise line’s enthusiasm perfectly:
“We remain committed to our guests to create unforgettable memories, so they can vacation better with us. We are particularly proud to partner with PhilaPort to launch cruising in the area, making it even more accessible to the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region.”
For travelers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and even parts of Maryland, this is excellent news.
No more early-morning airport stress, no more luggage fees — you can simply drive to the port, park, and start your vacation.
Final Thoughts
As someone who loves watching new cruise homeports open (it always feels like the start of new adventures), Philadelphia’s comeback is genuinely exciting.
Norwegian Jewel brings a mix of charm, great itineraries, and the kind of easy, summertime Bermuda vacations people in this region have been wanting for years.
