Passenger Reactions Grow After Carnival Reveals New Gratuity Increase

Carnival Cruise Line’s decision to increase its daily gratuity rates has quickly sparked widespread debate among cruise passengers.

While some travelers say the change is reasonable, others are questioning how tipping works and whether cruise lines should instead raise crew salaries directly.

The increase adds $1 per guest, per day, marking Carnival’s first gratuity adjustment since April 2023.

New Daily Gratuity Rate Still Lower Than Competitors

With the latest update, Carnival’s increased gratuity now stands at $17 per person, per day, depending on cabin type.

Despite the increase, Carnival’s rates remain among the lowest compared to other major cruise lines.

Here’s how Carnival compares:

  • Carnival Cruise Line: $17 per person, per day.
  • Royal Caribbean: $18.50 per person, per day.
  • Norwegian Cruise Line: $20 per person, per day.
  • Virgin Voyages: $22 per person, per day (discounted to $20 if prepaid).
  • Margaritaville at Sea: $22 per person, per day.

Many guests acknowledge that the increase reflects inflation and rising living costs, especially since Carnival had not adjusted gratuities for nearly three years.

Carnival Says Crew Receive Every Dollar

One of the biggest concerns among passengers is whether the additional gratuity actually reaches crew members.

Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald addressed this directly, reassuring guests that all gratuities go entirely to crew.

According to Carnival, this applies regardless of how tips are paid:

  • Prepaid gratuities before sailing.
  • Automatic daily gratuities are charged onboard.
  • Cash tips are given directly to the crew.

Carnival maintains that none of these gratuities are withheld by the company.

Ongoing Debate About Crew Wages and Tipping Culture

Even with that reassurance, some passengers remain uncomfortable with the tipping system itself.

Many guests argue that cruise lines should pay higher base wages instead of relying heavily on gratuities.

Some cruisers feel tipping has shifted away from rewarding exceptional service and instead has become a mandatory part of cruise pricing.

Because cruise lines do not publicly disclose detailed crew salary structures, gratuities remain an important part of crew income.

Service Charges Add to Passenger Frustration

Beyond daily gratuities, many passengers are also frustrated by additional service charges applied to onboard purchases.

Carnival increased its onboard service charge from 18% to 20% in late 2025, which applies to:

  • Drink packages and individual beverages.
  • Specialty dining experiences.
  • In-cabin gifts and decorations.
  • Bottled water and other delivered items.

Unlike gratuities, these service charges are not clearly defined as direct tips to crew members, which adds to guest confusion.

Gratuities Already Included in Some Markets

Interestingly, Carnival already includes gratuities in cruise fares for certain regions, such as Australia.

However, Carnival has indicated there are currently no plans to include gratuities in fares for sailings departing from the United States or Europe.

Mixed Reactions as Cruise Industry Costs Continue Rising

Passenger reactions remain divided.

Some guests see the increase as reasonable and necessary to support hardworking crew members.

Others believe cruise fares should be structured differently, with higher upfront pricing and fewer mandatory gratuities and service charges.

As cruise prices and onboard costs continue to evolve, gratuities remain one of the most discussed — and sometimes controversial — aspects of the cruise experience.
