When I first heard about Ambassador Cruise Line back in 2021, I was intrigued. A brand-new cruise line launching in the middle of a pandemic?

That’s bold. Like many other cruisers, I wanted to know exactly where it came from, who was backing it, and how it connected (if at all) to older UK cruise brands.

And of course, with the big 2025 news of a merger, things got even more interesting.

So, let me walk you through everything I’ve discovered about Ambassador Cruise Line, its ownership, its ties to a former cruise line, and where it’s heading in the future.

The Birth of the Ambassador Group

One thing that sets Ambassador apart is how it started.

Unlike P&O Cruises, which is part of Carnival Corporation, or Marella Cruises, which sits under the TUI Group, Ambassador began life as a standalone private company.

That independence didn’t last long, though. In 2025, Ambassador Cruise Line announced a major change: it was merging with the French cruise line Compagnie Française de Croisières (CFC). Together, they now form The Ambassador Group.

  • Before the merger, Ambassador was known for being a smaller, UK-focused line with just two ships.
  • Now, as part of a group, it has a slightly bigger footprint — three ships in total.

Sure, it’s still tiny compared to cruise giants like Carnival or Royal Caribbean, but it’s a step up from operating completely on its own.

Ambassador’s Origins (and Its Ties to CMV)

Whenever I talk about Ambassador Cruise Line, someone always asks: “Isn’t this just Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV) rebranded?”

The truth is a little complicated. Officially, Ambassador is a completely new company, launched in 2021 after CMV collapsed in 2020. Legally and financially, the two are distinct.

But here’s the thing — it’s hard not to see the similarities:

  • Both companies are based in the same area of the UK.
  • Both targeted a very similar audience (largely over-50s looking for no-fly cruises from the UK).
  • And most tellingly, the same CEO who ran CMV now runs Ambassador.

To me, it feels like a natural continuation. CMV may have gone under, but many of the ideas and even the spirit of that cruise line have carried forward under Ambassador’s flag.

There’s a difference, though: while CMV was known for offering bargain, traditional cruises, Ambassador has positioned itself as a little more premium.

It’s not luxury — but it does feel a step up, with fresher ships and more modern touches.

The People Behind the Cruise Line

Whenever I consider sailing with a new cruise line, I like to know who’s in charge. After all, leadership shapes the onboard experience.

If the name rings a bell, that’s because Verhounig was also the CEO and Chairman of Cruise & Maritime Voyages from 2011 until CMV’s closure in 2020.

It feels like he wanted to give cruisers what CMV couldn’t quite deliver in the end — stability and a more polished product.

On the commercial side, you’ve got Phil Gardner, Ambassador’s Chief Commercial Officer. His background is in travel and tourism, having worked for companies like Thomas Cook and TUI.

That mix of experience — some cruise, some retail, some broader travel — really shapes the company into something new rather than just a CMV reboot.

Where Ambassador Calls Home

Ambassador Cruise Line is proudly based in Purfleet, Essex, just a stone’s throw from London Tilbury.

That location isn’t random — Tilbury has long been a gateway for British no-fly cruises, and it’s now the home port for Ambassador’s flagship ship, Ambience.

When I sailed out of Tilbury, I couldn’t help but feel how convenient it was — no long-haul flights, just a quick trip down the motorway, and I was ready to board.

That’s a huge selling point for Ambassador, especially for passengers who prefer to skip airports.

But Tilbury isn’t the only option. Ambassador’s second ship, Ambition, has been opening up cruises from regional UK ports as well.

That means more people around the country can hop on board without trekking to London.

For me, that flexibility is a game-changer. It makes cruising feel more accessible, especially for folks who don’t live near London.

One of the fascinating things about Ambassador Cruise Line is how its ships carry a lot of history with them. They aren’t brand-new builds — but that’s not a bad thing.

These vessels have had rich past lives with other cruise lines before finding their home with Ambassador.

Ambience was the first ship in the fleet, and her story is pretty wild. Before Ambassador snapped her up, there were plans to turn her into a floating hotel by Ocean Builders.

Thankfully, she avoided that fate and returned to the seas where she belongs.

  • She originally launched in 2001 as the Regal Princess for Princess Cruises.
  • Later, she sailed for P&O Cruises Australia under the name Pacific Dawn.
  • Finally, in 2022, she was reborn as Ambience under the Ambassador’s flag.

The second ship, Ambition, has an equally colorful history. She first debuted in 1999 as Mistral for Festival Cruises.

Since then, she’s sailed under several names and brands:

  • And finally, she joined Ambassador in 2023 as Ambition

I love sailing ships with a bit of history — they feel like they have stories to tell, and Ambassador has done a good job of refreshing them for a new era.

One thing I always check with a newer cruise line is: “What happens if things go wrong?”

Nobody wants to think about cancellations or financial collapse, but let’s be honest, after what happened with CMV, many cruisers are cautious.

That’s why it was reassuring to see that in September 2022, Ambassador Cruise Line became fully registered with ABTA (the Association of British Travel Agents).

What this means for you as a guest:

  • If Ambassador were ever to go under, your money is protected. You’d get a refund for any bookings you’d made.
  • If you were already on holiday and the company folded, you’d be brought home safely.

To me, this is a non-negotiable piece of mind. It shows that the Ambassador learned from the past and wants to give passengers confidence in booking.

Final Thoughts – A New Beginning with Familiar Roots

So, who really owns Ambassador Cruise Line? Technically, it began as an independent private company, and now it’s part of the Ambassador Group thanks to the merger with CFC in 2025. But ownership is only part of the story.

What makes Ambassador interesting is its DNA: it clearly carries the spirit of Cruise & Maritime Voyages, yet it’s trying to be more premium, more polished, and more forward-looking.

  • Target market: Primarily over-50s, but the appeal is broad enough that adults of all ages can enjoy it.
  • Cruise style: No-fly cruises from the UK (and France, with CFC), with a growing mix of itineraries.
  • Future plans: Caribbean sailings are on the horizon — a big step for a line that’s so far specialized in UK departures.

For me, Ambassador feels like the perfect blend of nostalgia and newness. It picks up where CMV left off, but with a stronger foundation and a team determined not to repeat history.

And honestly? With the merger and new Caribbean itineraries, I think the best is yet to come.
