Norwegian Cruise Line is getting ready to completely transform visits to Great Stirrup Cay, and now cruisers finally know exactly when the line’s long-awaited waterpark will officially open.
The brand-new Great Tides Waterpark is scheduled to welcome its first guests on September 4, 2026, turning NCL’s private island in the Bahamas into an even bigger attraction for families, thrill seekers, and water slide lovers.
And honestly, this is shaping up to be much more than just a few extra slides added near the beach.
The project is massive.
Great Stirrup Cay Is About to Look Completely Different
For years, Great Stirrup Cay has been known more for its laid-back beach atmosphere than adrenaline-style attractions.
That’s now changing in a very big way.
Norwegian Cruise Line has confirmed the nearly 6-acre waterpark will feature:
- 19 waterslides
- A giant slide tower
- Cliff jumps
- Water coasters
- Family raft rides
- Kids splash zones
- A redesigned lazy river experience
- Premium cabanas and lounges
- Swim-up bars and new food venues
The opening date also lines up perfectly with the debut season of Norwegian Luna, which will become the first ship to officially bring guests to the upgraded destination.
For cruisers sailing after September 4, passes for the waterpark officially go on sale beginning May 28.
A Massive 170-Foot Tower Will Be the Centerpiece
At the heart of the new attraction will be the enormous Tidal Tower, which rises 170 feet above the island and acts as the launching point for several of the park’s biggest attractions.
Norwegian is clearly leaning heavily into thrill rides this time around, especially compared to the more relaxed vibe the island traditionally offered.
Some of the most talked-about attractions include:
Breakwater Blasters
These water coasters are expected to become one of the park’s signature rides, combining high-speed slide sections with uphill propulsion moments.
Whitewater Dash
Fast-paced body slides built for guests chasing speed and steep drops.
Rapid Mat Racers
Competitive side-by-side racing slides where guests can race friends and family to the finish.
Tropic Storm & Tropic Spiral
Twisting enclosed slides featuring sharp turns, spinning elements, and sudden drops.
The Cliff Jump Feature Might Become the Biggest Attention Grabber
One of the most unusual additions is something cruise private islands almost never offer — real cliff jumping.
The area, called Cliffside Cove, will feature:
- 10-foot cliff jumps.
- 15-foot cliff jumps.
That’s a pretty bold move for a cruise line destination and instantly separates Great Tides Waterpark from many competing cruise private islands.
It’s likely going to become one of the most photographed spots on the island.
Families Are Getting Plenty of Attractions Too
While thrill rides are getting most of the attention, Norwegian clearly designed the park to appeal to every age group.

The Great Slide
A giant four-person raft slide that Norwegian says will be the only attraction of its kind in the Caribbean.
Splash Cay
A huge 9,000-square-foot splash zone built specifically for younger kids, complete with:
- Small slides
- Water sprays
- Fountains
- Tipping buckets
- Interactive play structures
That family focus is important because Great Stirrup Cay attracts a huge number of multigenerational cruise groups throughout the year.
This Isn’t a Typical Lazy River
Norwegian is also putting a different spin on the classic lazy river concept.
Instead of a slow floating loop, the new Wandering River is being marketed as a more immersive experience with multiple zones and changing energy levels throughout the route.
The river stretches more than 800 feet and includes:
- Relaxing float sections
- Faster current areas
- Water effects
- Scenic landscaping
- A multi-sensory grotto experience
So guests can either chill quietly or drift into more active sections depending on what kind of experience they want.
Luxury Cabanas and Private Spaces Will Also Be Available
For guests wanting a more upscale island day, Norwegian is also adding premium cabanas around the waterpark.
Artist renderings show setups that include:
- Covered lounge seating.
- Ceiling fans.
- Water loungers.
- Private shaded areas.
- Easy access to attractions.
Each cabana accommodates up to six guests and automatically includes waterpark access.
The cabanas appear to be spread throughout different sections of the park, including areas near:
- The waterslides.
- The lazy river.
- Main relaxation spaces.
Pricing hasn’t been officially released yet, but Norwegian confirmed prices will vary depending on sailing date, season, demand, and ship traffic.
Great Stirrup Cay Is Becoming a Full Resort Destination
The waterpark is only part of a much larger transformation happening on Great Stirrup Cay.
Norwegian is also expanding the private island with:
- New beach areas.
- Swim-up bars.
- Additional restaurants.
- Three food trucks.
- The Great Life Lagoon.
- The adults-only Vibe Shore Club.
- Updated transportation systems.
- Expanded relaxation areas.
The island’s new tram system is also designed to help guests move around more easily without walking long distances in the Bahamas’ heat.
Norwegian Luna Will Lead the Grand Opening
The first official sailing to experience the upgraded island will be Norwegian Luna’s August 29, 2026, Caribbean cruise from Miami.
That itinerary includes stops at:
- Puerto Plata
- St. Thomas
- Tortola
- Great Stirrup Cay
The private island visit will happen at the very end of the voyage, making the waterpark debut one of the cruise’s biggest highlights.
After that, several other NCL ships are already scheduled to begin visiting the island throughout fall and winter 2026, including:
- Norwegian Prima
- Norwegian Aqua
- Norwegian Joy
- Norwegian Getaway
- Norwegian Jewel
And once peak Caribbean season begins, thousands of passengers every week are expected to flood the new attraction.
Norwegian Is Clearly Competing With Royal Caribbean and Carnival
This entire project feels like Norwegian’s answer to the growing competition among cruise lines building giant private destinations.

Now Norwegian is making sure Great Stirrup Cay becomes more than just a beach stop.
