Missing Passenger Search on Carnival Panorama Ends With Confirmed Overboard

A shipwide search aboard Carnival Panorama ended with devastating news Saturday afternoon after surveillance footage confirmed that a male passenger had gone overboard.

The incident unfolded on September 19, 2026, during the final full day of a seven-night Mexican Riviera cruise from Long Beach.

What initially appeared to passengers to be a search for a missing guest eventually led Carnival Panorama to change course while thousands of people onboard were instructed to return to their staterooms.

Several hours after the first announcements, the captain informed passengers that a review of the ship’s cameras had confirmed the guest had gone overboard.

Carnival Cruise Line confirmed the incident, saying the male guest went overboard while Carnival Panorama was sailing from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, toward Long Beach, California.

Both U.S. and Mexican authorities were notified, while Carnival’s care team began supporting the guest’s family and traveling companions.

Announcements for a Missing Passenger Began Around 11 A.M.

Passengers first became aware that something unusual was happening late Saturday morning.

According to an onboard passenger who documented the developing situation on Reddit, announcements asking for assistance in locating a missing guest began at approximately 11 a.m.

The announcements reportedly continued several times throughout the morning and into the afternoon.

At that stage, passengers had not been told that an overboard incident had occurred.

Carnival Panorama was spending the day at sea after leaving its final port of call, Puerto Vallarta, on Thursday evening.

The ship was supposed to continue north toward Southern California before returning to Long Beach on Sunday morning.

But Saturday afternoon, its movement changed.

Carnival Panorama Turned Back South

At approximately 3 p.m., passengers noticed Carnival Panorama making a broad turn.

Instead of continuing north toward Long Beach, the ship began heading south again.

AIS tracking showed the change taking place roughly 190 miles south of Ensenada and approximately 345 miles south-southeast of Long Beach, according to Cruise Hive.

The maneuver came as the search for the missing passenger intensified.

About 30 minutes later, passengers received a much more significant announcement.

Every Passenger Was Asked to Return to Their Cabin

At approximately 3:30 p.m., Carnival announced that a full shipwide search was underway.

All passengers were instructed to return to their staterooms and remain there.

This allowed security personnel to systematically account for guests rather than attempting to determine who might be missing while thousands of passengers continued moving around the ship.

Security officers went from cabin to cabin and scanned passengers’ ship identification cards.

One onboard passenger reported having both occupants’ cards scanned at approximately 4 p.m.

The process understandably disrupted the final afternoon of the cruise, but accounting for everyone aboard had become the immediate priority.

Passengers Remained in Their Rooms as the Search Continued

The search wasn’t completed quickly.

At approximately 4:30 p.m., another announcement informed passengers that efforts to locate the missing guest were continuing.

Guests were told to remain inside their staterooms.

By this point, Carnival Panorama had significantly slowed and was facing south rather than continuing toward its scheduled Sunday arrival in California.

Passengers could see that something serious was unfolding, but they still did not have confirmation of exactly what had happened.

That changed at approximately 5 p.m.

CCTV Footage Confirmed the Passenger Had Gone Overboard

After reviewing Carnival Panorama’s onboard surveillance footage, the ship’s team confirmed that the missing male passenger had gone overboard.

The captain and cruise director informed passengers of the finding at approximately 5 p.m.

Carnival Cruise Line subsequently confirmed the incident publicly.

The cruise line said that after being notified of the missing passenger, the ship’s team initiated its search and investigation procedures, including reviewing CCTV footage.

The U.S. Coast Guard and Mexican authorities were also notified.

Once the onboard search was completed and the surveillance footage established what had happened, passengers were told they no longer needed to remain in their staterooms.

The search-and-rescue response was then left with the appropriate authorities.

Carnival Is Supporting the Guest’s Family

The passenger’s family members and traveling companions were notified and offered assistance from Carnival’s care team.

The cruise line expressed its condolences and said it was providing support to the family.

No identifying information about the passenger has been publicly disclosed.

Carnival has also not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident beyond confirming that its CCTV review showed the guest going overboard.

That means there are still significant details about the event that are not publicly known.

For the family and others traveling with the guest, what should have been the final relaxing day of a weeklong vacation instead became an unimaginable situation hundreds of miles from the ship’s homeport.

Carnival Panorama Resumed Its Course Toward Long Beach

Once the shipwide search ended, Carnival Panorama turned back toward California.

Passengers were released from their cabins, and the ship resumed its original northbound route toward Long Beach.

At that point, the vessel had lost valuable travel time because of the course reversal and search operation.

Carnival Panorama was reportedly traveling at approximately 21 knots afterward, close to the ship’s higher operating speeds, as it attempted to make up some of that time.

The original schedule called for the ship to arrive in Long Beach at approximately 9 a.m. on Sunday, September 20.

The question then became whether Saturday’s emergency response would affect that arrival.

The Incident Happened at the End of a 7-Night Mexican Riviera Cruise

Carnival Panorama departed Long Beach on Sunday, September 13 for a seven-night Mexican Riviera itinerary.

The scheduled cruise included calls at:

  • Cabo San Lucas
  • Mazatlán
  • Puerto Vallarta

After leaving Puerto Vallarta, the ship had two days at sea scheduled for the return trip to Southern California.

Saturday was therefore supposed to be the final full day onboard before passengers disembarked Sunday morning.

That timing made the emergency particularly complicated.

Carnival Panorama wasn’t simply returning to port with the current passengers.

Another group of guests was preparing to board the ship the following day.

Could the September 20 Cruise Be Delayed?

Carnival Panorama’s next cruise is scheduled to depart Long Beach on Sunday, September 20.

The six-night Mexican Riviera itinerary is scheduled to visit Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada before returning to Long Beach on September 26.

As of the initial reporting following the overboard incident, Carnival had not announced a change to the next cruise.

The ship’s faster northbound speed after completing its onboard search suggested the crew was working to recover lost time.

Whether the course reversal would ultimately create a meaningful arrival delay depended on how much time Carnival Panorama could recover overnight.

Even a delayed arrival doesn’t automatically mean the next cruise must be canceled.

Cruise lines can sometimes adjust embarkation times if a ship returns later than planned.

But until Carnival issues a schedule change, passengers on the September 20 sailing should not assume their departure has been altered.

A Difficult Final Day Aboard Carnival Panorama

For passengers already onboard, the mood of the cruise changed dramatically within a matter of hours.

The morning began with announcements attempting to locate someone.

By mid-afternoon, the ship had turned around.

Then thousands of passengers were asked to return to their cabins while security personnel accounted for guests throughout the vessel.

Finally came the announcement nobody wanted to hear.

Surveillance footage had confirmed the missing passenger had gone overboard.

The ship could eventually turn back toward Long Beach and resume its schedule.

For the passenger’s family and traveling companions, however, the cruise had changed permanently.

Carnival Panorama continued north toward California while U.S. and Mexican authorities took over the response at sea.

At this time, Carnival has not publicly released the passenger’s identity or additional information about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
