What was supposed to be a thrilling ride on the tallest waterslide at sea has turned into a legal battle for one Royal Caribbean passenger.

A guest aboard the Icon of the Seas was injured earlier this month after part of the ship’s Frightening Bolt waterslide shattered mid-ride — and he’s now suing the cruise line.

How the Incident Happened

The accident took place on August 7, 2025, when an acrylic glass section of the Frightening Bolt slide broke while in use.

This jaw-dropping slide, part of the ship’s Category 6 Waterpark, boasts a 46-foot drop and a full 360-degree loop — making it one of the main attractions onboard.

The passenger, whose name hasn’t been released, suffered lacerations to his legs and hands.

Thankfully, he didn’t fall through the hole, but water gushed out of the broken section, soaking loungers and sunbathers below, and creating slippery spots around the deck.

The ship’s medical team treated him immediately, but the full extent of his injuries hasn’t been made public.

Legal Action Begins

Two days after disembarking in Miami on August 9, the man, through his lawyers at Lipcon, Margulies & Winkleman, P.A., announced he would be seeking compensation from Royal Caribbean.

The Florida-based maritime law firm is no stranger to cruise injury cases — they’ve recovered over $500 million for clients.

“Cruise ships have a responsibility to ensure that the attractions they open and encourage passengers to use are safe,” said maritime attorney Alex Perez, who added that the firm was honored to represent the family.

Slide Closed, Investigation Underway

Following the incident, the Frightening Bolt was immediately shut down for the rest of the voyage while engineers examined the damage.

Royal Caribbean is investigating whether the failure stemmed from a manufacturing defect, installation issue, or some kind of unforeseen impact.

Although speculation began circulating online — including unfounded claims about the guest’s weight being a factor — there’s currently no evidence to support those rumors.

It’s a reminder that not everything you read on social media should be taken at face value.

Impact on Other Ships

While the other five slides in the Category 6 Waterpark remain open, Royal Caribbean has also closed the identical Frightening Bolt aboard its newest ship, Star of the Seas, as a precaution.

This comes at a tricky time for the brand, as Star of the Seas is in the middle of media and travel agent previews ahead of her naming ceremony later this month.

Safety Commitments

Royal Caribbean maintains that guest safety is its top priority, noting that it often exceeds the international requirements set by the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) convention and the U.S. Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act.

While the investigation continues, all eyes will be on how quickly and safely the cruise line can get the slide back in operation — and on the outcome of the lawsuit, which could set a precedent for future cruise attraction liability cases.
