Hurricane Erin, which briefly strengthened into a Category 5 monster with winds up to 160 mph, has thrown cruise schedules into disarray this week.
At least six major cruise lines have been forced to change itineraries, swap ports, or cut visits short in order to steer passengers and crew away from danger.
Carnival Cruises: Sunshine Skips Bermuda

Guests on Carnival Sunshine who embarked from Norfolk on 17th August are expected to spend six nights in Bermuda.
Instead:
- Bermuda stops were cancelled outright
- The ship diverted south, now visiting Celebration Key and Nassau
- Excursion refunds were issued, with fresh tours offered for the replacement ports
MSC’s Flagship: World America Heads for Mexico

For her inaugural season, MSC World America was meant to sail to Amber Cove and San Juan.
Erin forced a switch:
- Calls to Costa Maya and Cozumel were added instead
- Ocean Cay remains on the itinerary before returning to Miami
- All cancelled excursion fees refunded, with new ones open for booking
Norwegian Cruise Line: Aqua and Jewel Adjust Plans

- Norwegian Aqua (from New York): Bermuda was replaced with Saint John, New Brunswick, a cooler northern stop.
- Guests received:
- Onboard credit
- A 20% Future Cruise Credit
- A reminder that docking in Saint John depends on weather conditions
- Norwegian Jewel (from Boston): Did make it to Bermuda, but left a full day early to keep a safe distance from Erin before heading back to New England.
Holland America’s Zuiderdam: St. John’s Out, Halifax In

The transatlantic MS Zuiderdam was due for an overnight in St. John’s, Newfoundland, but rough seas made it unsafe.
Instead:
- That stop was cancelled
- The ship enjoyed an extended stay in Halifax before moving toward Boston
Royal Caribbean & Disney: Heading North and West

- Liberty of the Seas: Dropped an overnight in Bermuda, sailing to Halifax instead. Guests were compensated with onboard credit.
- Disney Treasure: Avoided the Eastern Caribbean entirely, opting for a Western Caribbean route to steer clear of Erin’s path.
How Cruise Lines Manage Hurricane Disruptions
While frustrating, these itinerary changes highlight how cruise lines prioritize safety first:
- Ships rarely, if ever, sail into a hurricane — they reroute or delay instead
- With speeds over 20 knots, cruise ships can usually outpace storms
- Captains receive constant forecasts from the National Hurricane Center and in-house meteorologists
- Adjustments can mean:
- Adding sea days
- Swapping regions entirely
- Or substituting nearby ports
Outright cancellations are rare, only occurring when departure or arrival ports are unsafe to operate.
Why Travel Insurance Matters During Hurricane Season
Even though cruise lines typically:
- Refund for cancelled tours
- Provide credits or compensation
…independently booked flights, hotels, or private excursions are usually not covered.
That’s why experts recommend:
- Policies that specifically include missed port cover
- Protection for trip interruptions and weather disruptions
This way, guests won’t be left out of pocket when nature forces last-minute changes.
Final Word
Hurricane Erin’s strength and path have already reshaped itineraries for Carnival, MSC, Norwegian, Holland America, Royal Caribbean, and Disney guests.
While nobody likes losing a dream port stop, cruise lines continue to show that keeping passengers safe — even if it means detours — remains their guiding principle.
