When you think about a cruise ship waterpark, the last thing you expect is for part of the slide to break under you.
But that’s exactly what happened aboard Icon of the Seas on the evening of August 7th, 2025 — and let me tell you, it was one of the most shocking cruise stories I’ve ever witnessed unfold.
When Thrills Turn Terrifying

I’ve always believed that Thrill Island’s Category 6 Waterpark was one of the safest places to get your adrenaline fix at sea.
After all, it’s the largest waterpark on a cruise ship, with a bunch of record-breakers — and Frightening Bolt is its crown jewel.
- Tallest drop at sea: 46 feet of pure heart-pounding excitement.
- Dramatic trapdoor launch: One moment you’re standing, the next… you’re gone.
- Full 360° loop: The clear acrylic tube gives you those surreal “flying through the ocean air” vibes.
But that night, things went very wrong. According to multiple passengers — and later confirmed by Royal Caribbean — the clear acrylic section of Frightening Bolt shattered while a guest was mid-ride.
The Moment It Happened
From what I’ve gathered, the rider — an adult male — suffered skin lacerations from his legs to his hands as the acrylic panel broke.
Imagine being inside a slide, moving at high speed, and suddenly feeling the structure give way around you.
The moment the panel shattered:
- Water burst through the opening, drenching guests relaxing on the deck below.
- The sudden downpour made Deck 15 dangerously slippery for a short while.
- People’s relaxing evening turned into a “what just happened?” moment in seconds.
Thankfully, there were no other injuries reported. But as you can imagine, the ride was immediately shut down for the rest of the sailing.
Royal Caribbean Steps In
Credit where it’s due — the crew reacted fast.
Royal Caribbean released a statement confirming:
“Our team provided medical care to an adult guest when acrylic glass broke off a water slide as the guest passed through the slide. The guest is being treated for his injuries. The water slide is closed for the remainder of the sailing pending an investigation.”
Here’s what happened next:
- Medical staff treated the guest right away.
- The Deck 15 area around the slide was temporarily closed as a precaution.
- An official investigation was launched, with engineers to assess the damage.
The Cruise Goes On… But With One Less Thrill
At the time, Icon of the Seas was on a 7-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary that had started from PortMiami on August 2nd.
The ports of call included:
- St. Maarten
- St. Thomas
- Perfect Day at CocoCay (Royal Caribbean’s private island)
By the time of the incident, we were nearing the end of the cruise. Whether the slide will be fixed in time for the next sailing on August 9th was still up in the air.
How Rare Are Waterslide Breaks at Sea?
As someone who’s spent years covering cruise news, I can say — waterslide malfunctions on ships are incredibly rare.
Cruise lines like Royal Caribbean follow:
- Strict safety regulations
- Regular attraction inspections
- Detailed structural checks before every sailing
Icon of the Seas only entered service in early 2024, making it one of the fleet’s newest and most high-tech ships.
But as this incident shows, even cutting-edge attractions can face unexpected failures.
Some guests are already wondering — was it a manufacturing flaw or an installation issue?
Either way, Royal Caribbean has said the slide will not reopen until experts confirm it’s safe.
Impact on Sister Ship Star of the Seas
Interestingly, Star of the Seas, set to launch next week, will also feature the Frightening Bolt slide.
At this point, there’s no official word on whether this incident will affect operations on that ship — but I wouldn’t be surprised if engineers give it an extra-thorough inspection.
A Pattern with Glass Incidents?
Here’s something worth noting — this isn’t the first time glass-related structural failures have happened on a Royal Caribbean ship this summer:
- June 8, 2025 – A glass panel at Symphony of the Seas’ Coastal Kitchen shattered, narrowly missing nearby guests.
- June 29, 2025 – Another glass panel in the Solarium roof broke while docking in Port Canaveral, Florida.
It’s too early to say if these are connected, but it does raise the question: Are certain ship areas more prone to stress-related glass damage?
Final Thoughts
I feel for the injured guest — what was meant to be an exciting ride turned into an unforgettable (and not in a good way) cruise memory.
I also know that Royal Caribbean will thoroughly investigate and take steps to prevent anything like this from happening again.
Cruising is still one of the safest ways to travel, and incidents like this are extremely rare.
But it’s a reminder that even at sea, life can surprise you — sometimes with a splash, sometimes with a shatter.
Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery for the guest and a safe reopening of Frightening Bolt in the future.
