Golden Retriever Joins Royal Caribbean’s Newest Icon-Class Ship Ahead of Its Maiden Voyage

Every new cruise ship comes with exciting features, impressive entertainment, and brand-new restaurants.

But aboard Royal Caribbean’s Legend of the Seas, one of the biggest stars won’t be found on the pool deck or in the theater—it’ll have four paws, a wagging tail, and a very important job.

Royal Caribbean has officially welcomed Skipper, the cruise line’s newest Chief Dog Officer, who has already moved aboard Legend of the Seas ahead of the ship’s inaugural season in Europe.

The lovable Golden Retriever will become a permanent member of the crew, greeting guests, boosting morale, and continuing one of the cruise industry’s most unique traditions.

Skipper Has Already Settled Into His New Home

According to updates shared on social media, Skipper boarded Legend of the Seas earlier this month, giving him time to get comfortable before thousands of guests arrive for the ship’s maiden voyage.

The newest Icon Class vessel is scheduled to welcome its first paying passengers on July 4, 2026, launching a seven-night Western Mediterranean cruise from Civitavecchia, the main cruise port serving Rome.

By the time guests step onboard, Skipper will already be familiar with his floating home.

The Newest Member of Royal Caribbean’s Canine Team

Skipper isn’t the first dog to hold the title of Chief Dog Officer.

He joins an exclusive group that already includes:

  • Rover, who serves aboard Icon of the Seas.
  • Sailor, the resident Chief Dog Officer on Star of the Seas.

Together, the three Golden Retrievers have become unofficial ambassadors for Royal Caribbean, creating memorable moments for both passengers and crew members.

Unlike occasional therapy dog visits, these dogs actually live onboard full time while sailing with the ship.

More Than Just a Mascot

Royal Caribbean describes its Chief Dog Officers as family dogs for everyone onboard.

Their role goes far beyond simply posing for photos.

The program was created to bring smiles, reduce stress, and create positive interactions throughout the voyage.

Guests may encounter Skipper during walks around the ship, special appearances, or informal meet-and-greet moments, while crew members also benefit from spending time with the ship’s four-legged resident.

For employees who spend months away from home, having a friendly dog onboard can provide a welcome emotional boost during long contracts at sea.

Skipper Trained Before Going to Sea

Born in February 2026, Skipper spent his first months preparing for life aboard one of the world’s largest cruise ships.

Before joining Legend of the Seas, he underwent specialized training at Royal Caribbean’s headquarters in Miami.

The Chief Dog Officer program is operated in partnership with the American Humane Society, helping ensure each dog receives professional care, proper socialization, and training before beginning life at sea.

Royal Caribbean has also confirmed that every Chief Dog Officer has dedicated caregivers onboard responsible for their daily routine, exercise, health, and overall well-being.

First Guests Will Meet Skipper in the Mediterranean

Skipper’s first official assignment begins with Legend of the Seas’ inaugural voyage through the Western Mediterranean.

The seven-night cruise departs from Civitavecchia on July 4 and includes visits to several of Southern Europe’s most popular destinations.

Ports on the maiden itinerary include:

  • La Spezia, Italy
  • Palma de Mallorca, Spain
  • Barcelona, Spain
  • Marseille, France

Guests will also enjoy two relaxing sea days while sailing through the Mediterranean.

Throughout the summer, Legend of the Seas will continue offering similar European itineraries before changing regions later in the year.

Europe First, Caribbean Next

Following its inaugural Mediterranean season, Legend of the Seas will remain based in Europe through late October.

After completing its final European voyages, the ship will cross the Atlantic and reposition to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

From there, the newest Icon Class ship will begin operating Caribbean and Bahamas cruises, introducing North American travelers to Royal Caribbean’s latest flagship experience.

At more than 250,800 gross tons, Legend of the Seas ranks among the largest cruise ships ever constructed.

A Program Guests Have Quickly Fallen in Love With

When Royal Caribbean first introduced the Chief Dog Officer concept, many cruisers viewed it as a fun experiment.

It has since become one of the company’s most recognizable guest experience initiatives.

Photos of Rover and Sailor regularly circulate across social media, with passengers often sharing stories about unexpected encounters with the friendly Golden Retrievers during their vacations.

For many guests—especially families and dog lovers—meeting the ship’s resident canine becomes just as memorable as visiting a famous port or watching an evening production show.

One More Reason to Smile at Sea

Cruise vacations are filled with exciting attractions, but sometimes it’s the smallest surprises that leave the biggest impression.

For passengers sailing aboard Legend of the Seas, Skipper is likely to become one of those unforgettable memories.

Whether he’s greeting guests in the atrium, taking a stroll through the ship with his handlers, or simply brightening someone’s day with a wagging tail, Royal Caribbean’s newest Chief Dog Officer is ready to welcome thousands of cruisers during his first season at sea.

And judging by the popularity of his predecessors, it probably won’t take long before Skipper becomes one of the most photographed crew members onboard.
