Boarding a cruise for the very first time is supposed to be exciting—walking onto the ship, exploring your cabin, and settling in for a relaxing getaway.
But for one passenger sailing on Liberty of the Seas, that excitement quickly turned into frustration when their only suitcase disappeared before the vacation even began.
Instead of enjoying their cruise, they spent the entire trip worrying about lost belongings that never showed up.
Suitcase Never Arrived at Cabin After Boarding

The incident happened on February 6, 2026, when the passenger boarded Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas in Fort Lauderdale for a short Bahamas cruise.
The itinerary included stops at Nassau and Perfect Day at CocoCay—popular destinations for weekend sailings.
Like most cruisers, the guest handed their suitcase over to porters during embarkation, expecting it to be delivered outside their stateroom later that day.
But it never arrived.
According to the passenger, the missing bag contained everything they brought for the trip—including clothes, personal items, and even cash.
They later shared their frustration online, explaining that their entire cruise was overshadowed by the situation.
Endless Visits to Guest Services With No Resolution
Instead of relaxing and enjoying the ship, the guests found themselves repeatedly visiting Guest Services, hoping for updates.
They were asked to:
- File a Lost and Found report.
- Complete paperwork through Royal Caribbean’s tracking partner.
- Wait while the crew investigates the situation.
Despite these efforts, the suitcase was never located during the cruise.
Another passenger onboard confirmed that the crew did try to help by placing notices on cabin doors asking guests to check if they had mistakenly received luggage that wasn’t theirs.
This suggests the crew conducted a search, but unfortunately, it didn’t lead to a recovery.
Security Investigation Limited by Camera Issues
Adding to the guests’ frustration was the revelation that security cameras near their cabin were reportedly not working.
This meant investigators couldn’t review footage to determine whether the suitcase was misplaced, accidentally delivered elsewhere, or potentially taken by someone.
Without video evidence, the investigation hit a dead end.
For the guest, this lack of answers made the experience even more upsetting.
Compensation Offered—but Guest Felt It Was Too Low

Royal Caribbean eventually offered compensation, but it was limited.
The cruise line reportedly offered up to $300 reimbursement, which aligns with its standard liability policy for lost or damaged luggage.
However, the guest felt this amount didn’t come close to covering the value of everything that was lost.
Many cruise lines have similar limits unless passengers purchase additional travel insurance. Royal Caribbean’s optional travel protection plan, for example, can provide higher coverage for lost baggage.
Without extra insurance, compensation is often restricted to the cruise line’s standard limit.
Why Luggage Can Occasionally Go Missing on Cruise Ships
Cruise embarkation days involve thousands of suitcases being collected, sorted, screened, and delivered within hours.
While most luggage arrives without issue, problems can occur due to:
- Mislabeling or missing cabin tags.
- Bags were delivered to the wrong stateroom.
- Items left behind at the terminal.
- Rare cases of theft or loss.
Cruise lines rely on large logistical operations to move baggage quickly, but mistakes can still happen.
There’s Still a Small Chance the Suitcase Could Be Found
Although the cruise has already ended, there’s still a slim possibility the suitcase could turn up later.
Cruise lines sometimes discover misplaced luggage days—or even weeks—after a sailing ends. If that happens, the cruise line typically contacts the owner and ships the bag back to their home address.
However, recovery becomes less likely once the ship completes multiple sailings and luggage cycles through new embarkations.
A Tough Lesson for First-Time Cruisers
For this passenger, what should have been a memorable first cruise became a stressful experience.
Situations like this highlight why experienced cruisers often recommend:
- Keeping valuables, medications, and important items in carry-on bags.
- Avoid placing cash or essential items in checked luggage.
- Considering travel insurance for added protection.
While most cruises go smoothly, unexpected issues can happen—and preparation can make all the difference.
