What started as a normal morning onboard a Disney cruise quickly turned into a scene many passengers never expected to witness
Guests sailing aboard Disney Magic were left shocked after several crew members were detained by federal agents shortly after the ship arrived in San Diego late last month.
And according to one passenger who witnessed the incident firsthand…
Some of the crew members were still wearing their uniforms as they were escorted away.
A Passenger Recognized One of the Crew Members Being Detained
The incident gained attention after passenger Dharmi Mehta recorded part of the arrests while disembarking the ship.
Mehta later said she immediately recognized one of the individuals being detained because he had served as her family’s head waiter during the cruise.
According to her account:
- The crew member was still dressed in formal uniform attire.
- Other employees reportedly wore chef uniforms and name tags.
- Some were placed in restraints before being escorted into an unmarked white van.
One detail many passengers found unsettling:
Mehta said the same crew member had reportedly been serving breakfast less than an hour earlier.
The Arrests Happened Right at the Port
The incident reportedly took place on April 23, 2026, while the ship was docked in San Diego following a short sailing to Catalina Island and Ensenada.
Reports suggest approximately 10 crew members from Disney Cruise Line may have been detained that day.

The ship itself carries roughly 950 crew members.
Why Federal Agents Were Involved

Following the San Diego incident, activist organization Union del Barrio held a press conference near the port expressing concern about how the arrests were handled.
The group is calling for:
- Greater transparency from federal authorities.
- More information about the detentions.
- Increased protections for cruise ship employees.
The organization also used strong language criticizing the actions taken by federal agents.
Disney Cruise Line Continues Expanding in San Diego
Despite the controversy surrounding the arrests, Disney’s operations in Southern California continue to grow.
Disney Magic has already departed San Diego and repositioned to Vancouver for the Alaska cruise season.
Meanwhile, Disney Cruise Line recently reached a long-term agreement with the Port of San Diego that will increase seasonal sailings in the region through at least 2031.
Both Disney Magic and Disney Wonder are expected to continue offering seasonal departures from the West Coast.
