Cruise vacations often become unforgettable because of the entertainment and artists who bring ships to life.
Sadly, one recent themed sailing turned into an emotional moment for guests and performers alike after legendary jazz musician Ken Peplowski was found dead onboard the Celebrity Summit. He was 66.
The respected clarinetist and saxophonist passed away during a special music sailing that celebrates some of the world’s finest jazz performers.
A Performance That Never Happened Raised Alarm
Peplowski was scheduled to perform during The Jazz Cruise, a popular themed voyage known for gathering dozens of elite musicians and delivering hundreds of hours of live performances.
Concern grew when the musician failed to appear for a scheduled afternoon show featuring pianist Shelly Berg, a longtime colleague and close friend.
Event organizers quickly realized something was wrong when Peplowski missed the 4 p.m. performance.
After the crew and staff initiated a search, he was found deceased inside his cabin on the final day of the sailing.
Announcement Confirmed the Sudden Loss

Lee Mergner, a consultant working with Signature Cruise Experiences, confirmed the tragic news in an official announcement to guests and the wider jazz community.
According to the statement, Peplowski died suddenly on February 1 during the final day of the cruise’s 2026 sailing.
While the exact cause of death has not yet been confirmed, Mergner noted that Peplowski had been battling multiple myeloma—a cancer affecting plasma cells in bone marrow—since 2021.
A Career That Helped Shape Modern Jazz
Peplowski wasn’t just another performer on the lineup—he was widely respected across the global jazz scene.
British critic Russell Davies once described him as possibly the greatest living jazz clarinetist.
His musical journey included:
- Early success performing with classic swing bands.
- A thriving solo career began in the late 1980s.
- Dozens of recordings and collaborations with top jazz artists.
- His final studio album, Unheard Bird, was released in 2024.
Beyond his musical skill, colleagues frequently praised his humor, personality, and ability to connect with audiences.

While rare, medical emergencies and sudden losses can still occur, even during celebration-focused sailings.
In this case, Peplowski’s passing left a noticeable void for both fellow artists and guests who had gathered to celebrate jazz music.
