Imagine splurging on a private cabana at Disney’s brand-new island paradise, only to find a steep drop-off, jagged rocks, and crashing waves where soft sand should be.
That’s exactly what happened to some guests recently at Disney Cruise Line’s newest private island — and now, they’re sounding the alarm.
Trouble in Paradise: What’s Happening at Lookout Cay
Disney’s Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point just opened in summer 2024, but according to several cruisers, parts of the cabana area are already facing serious beach erosion.
Most of the concern centers around the Mabrika Cove Cabanas, especially cabanas 16 through 21, which have become increasingly unsafe due to steep ledges and rocky terrain.
One family staying in Cabana 21 on July 17, 2025, shared a stark warning:
“You could literally see the beach wash away while swimming in front of it. There was no way we could have stayed and swam safely.”
From Private Beach to Rocky Cliff
What shocked the guests most wasn’t just the rocky ground — it was how quickly it seemed to be deteriorating.
The cabana’s stairs, once leading to the beach, were now roped off, ending abruptly over a drop to rough rocks.
They described the experience vividly:
- “The rocks weren’t smooth. You had to walk carefully or risk falling into a hole.”
- “The current was so strong that even adults were being pushed into the rocks. The kids were being thrown right into them.”
Despite these dangers, guests say they saw no strong warning signage or active restrictions to keep people from using the cabanas.
Advice from Recent Guests
While Disney is known for its strong safety track record, guests are urging others to be cautious — at least for now.
Based on recent visits:
- Avoid cabanas 16 through 21: These seem to have the worst erosion.
- Opt for cabanas 1 through 5 if you want beach access without the danger.
- Adults without kids? Consider booking one of the six Serenity Bay cabanas in the adults-only area, where conditions are more stable.
Is Disney Fixing the Problem?
While Disney has yet to issue an official statement, it’s likely that solutions are already in the works.
Some possible fixes include:
- Installing a sea wall
- Regrading the sand
- Planting erosion-resistant native vegetation
Given the safety concerns and Disney’s reputation, it’s reasonable to expect action sooner rather than later.
Inside Disney’s Mabrika Cove Cabanas: What You Get
Despite the current erosion issues, these cabanas remain in high demand — and it’s easy to see why.
They offer a luxury escape on Disney’s already stunning private island, with amenities including:
- Indoor & outdoor cushioned seating
- Mini fridge with beverages
- Smart tablet for food & drink orders
- Charging outlets
- Plush towels and complimentary sunscreen
How Much Do They Cost?
The cabanas are available in two types:
Standard Cabanas (3–19)
- Up to 10 guests
- Start at just under $1,000 for 6 people
- Add extra guests (up to 10) for $56 per person
Grand Cabanas (1, 2, 20, 21)
- Fit up to 16 guests
- Start at $1,375 for 10 people
- Extra guests up to max capacity cost $56 each
Final Thoughts: A Dream Spot with a Few Growing Issues
Disney’s Lookout Cay still offers a magical beach day, but if you’re planning to reserve a cabana soon — especially in the higher-numbered Mabrika Cove spots — it’s worth checking updated reports or sticking to lower-numbered cabanas.
Safety always comes first, and while these cabanas are beautifully designed, nature has its own plans. Let’s hope Disney works its magic on the shoreline next.
