Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship, Disney Adventure, has officially rewritten the record books after becoming the largest passenger vessel ever to transit the Panama Canal—both by passenger capacity and gross tonnage.
The historic crossing took place on Monday and highlighted just how far modern cruise ship engineering—and canal operations—have evolved.
A Ship That Pushed the Canal to New Limits
Disney Adventure isn’t just big by cruise standards—it’s enormous by any maritime measure.

- 208,000 gross tons
- 342 meters (1,122 feet) in length
- 46.4 meters beam
- Capacity for around 6,700 passengers
- Supported by 2,500 crew members
- 2,111 staterooms
That size meant the transit wasn’t routine. It required precise coordination between Panama Canal pilots, tug operators, and multiple operational teams to guide the ship safely through the locks.
A Ceremonial Moment at the Agua Clara Locks
To mark the significance of the transit, Ricaurte Vásquez Morales personally presented a commemorative plaque to the ship during its passage through the Agua Clara Locks in Colón Province.
The recognition underscored the importance of the moment—not just for Disney Cruise Line, but for the Panama Canal Authority itself, which continues to demonstrate its ability to handle the world’s largest cruise vessels with consistency and safety.
A New Record—And a Big One
Before Disney Adventure, the title of the largest passenger ship to transit the canal belonged to Norwegian Bliss.

That’s an increase of about 40,000 gross tons, or roughly 24% larger than the previous record-holder—no small jump in canal transit terms.

Disney Adventure’s crossing wasn’t a one-off event. It’s part of a growing wave of megaships now capable of using the Neopanamax locks.
During the 2025–2026 season, five cruise ships are completing their first-ever Panama Canal transits, including:
- AIDAdiva
- Brilliant Lady
- Celebrity Ascent
- Star Seeker
Looking ahead, officials expect more than 40 Neopanamax cruise transits in fiscal year 2026, reinforcing the canal’s growing role in global cruise logistics.

This crossing sends a clear message: the Panama Canal is no longer a limiting factor for the world’s largest cruise ships.
For cruise lines, that means:

Disney Adventure: Built Big, Designed Bigger
Delivered into the Disney fleet in 2025, Disney Adventure was constructed at the Meyer Werft shipyards in Germany, well known for producing some of the most technically complex cruise ships afloat.
The ship is currently homeported in Singapore, operating three- and four-night sailings at sea, and features signature Disney attractions such as:
