What began as a family vacation aboard one of the world’s largest cruise ships ended with a passenger being arrested and facing serious criminal charges.
Authorities say a 25-year-old Illinois man was taken into custody after allegedly attempting to secretly photograph a teenage girl while onboard Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas.
The incident reportedly occurred during an Eastern Caribbean sailing that departed Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale on May 30, 2026.
The allegations have raised fresh concerns about passenger safety and privacy at sea, especially as cruise lines continue introducing stricter policies aimed at preventing unauthorized recording and photography onboard their ships.
Incident Reportedly Happened During a Day at Sea
According to reports, the alleged incident took place on May 31, the first full day of the cruise, while the ship was sailing between ports.
The teenage girl was visiting one of the onboard retail shops when she noticed suspicious behavior from another passenger nearby.
Authorities later alleged that the man repeatedly attempted to photograph or record her without permission and, on multiple occasions, tried to capture images underneath her dress.
The young passenger immediately informed her mother about what had happened.
That report triggered an onboard investigation that quickly involved Royal Caribbean’s security team.
After reviewing surveillance footage from the area, investigators reportedly found evidence supporting the girl’s account of the incident.
While officials have confirmed that the suspect and the victim were familiar with each other before boarding the cruise, no further details have been released regarding how they knew one another.
Arrest Made When Ship Returned to Florida
Rather than interrupting the voyage, authorities waited until the cruise returned to Fort Lauderdale before making an arrest.

The man, identified as Matthew Stilwell of Illinois, now faces three separate charges related to digital voyeurism.
