Sun Princess, the princess’s newest and largest cruise, faced a heartbreaking emergency this week when a crew member went overboard while sailing through the Dardanelles Strait in Turkey.
Timeline of Events
- Date: Wednesday, 20th August 2025
- Time: About 11 p.m. local time
- Location: Dardanelles Strait, Turkey
- Voyage: A 14-night sailing from Barcelona to Athens, with the ship en route to Istanbul at the time
Once the alarm was raised, the Sun Princess turned back, launched rescue boats, and coordinated with the Turkish Coast Guard, which deployed at least five vessels to join the overnight search.
Despite the extensive effort, the missing crew member was not recovered.
Cruise Line’s Statement

Princess Cruises later confirmed the individual was part of the crew team. The line withheld details such as the person’s name and role to respect the family’s privacy.
In an official statement, the cruise line said its emergency response team acted immediately, working with local maritime authorities.
They added:
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of our team member during this difficult time.”
To help those onboard, Princess deployed specially trained counsellors for passengers and crew, while its Family Assistance Programme began directly supporting the crew members’ relatives.
Voyage Disruptions and Itinerary Changes
The incident impacted the ship’s planned route:
- Diverted to Tekirdag, Turkey, to assist authorities with investigations.
- Arrived in Istanbul at 2 p.m. on Thursday instead of the scheduled 7 a.m.
- Guests were given until 11:30 p.m. to reboard, with limited half-day excursions still available.
- Scheduled call to Mykonos on 22nd August was cancelled, with excursion refunds automatically processed.
- Final disembarkation in Athens on 23rd August remains unchanged.
Sun Princess: Flagship of a New Era
- Class: First of the new Sphere-class vessels
- Tonnage: 177,000 gross tons
- Launched: Early 2024
- Capacity: 4,300 passengers + 1,600 crew
- Deployment: Summer 2025 in the Mediterranean
- Future Plans: Repositioning to Fort Lauderdale in November 2025 for Caribbean cruises before returning to Europe in spring 2026
This marks the first reported overboard case involving Sun Princess since she entered service.
Why Man Overboard Cases Are Critical

Cruise ships are equipped with strict emergency procedures, but survivability depends on many factors:
- Immediate action: Ships turn back and launch rescue boats instantly.
- External help: Coast Guard vessels are dispatched.
- Challenges: Strong currents, darkness, and cold waters reduce rescue chances.
- Safety protocols: Passengers and crew are always briefed about avoiding rail climbing and restricted deck access.
Such incidents remain rare, but when they do occur, they highlight the vulnerabilities of life at sea for crew and guests alike.
Final Thoughts
The loss of a crew member aboard Sun Princess is a sobering reminder that cruise ships, while often seen as floating resorts, are also workplaces where thousands dedicate their lives far from home.
Princess Cruises, passengers, and the wider maritime community continue to hold the missing individual and their loved ones in their thoughts.
