A tragic incident unfolded aboard Costa Cruises’ Costa Smeralda on February 6, 2026, while the ship was docked in Civitavecchia — the main cruise port serving Rome.
A male passenger, later identified as a German national, fell from the vessel in what authorities believe was an intentional act.
The heartbreaking event occurred in the afternoon while the ship was in the middle of its routine turnaround, with guests both boarding and leaving the vessel.
Incident Happened During Routine Port Operations
According to local reports, the fall took place around 2 p.m. at Pier 12, where Costa Smeralda was docked as part of its regular Mediterranean itinerary.
Unlike many cruise ships that operate fixed start-and-end sailings, Costa Cruises often allows guests to embark or disembark at multiple ports during its rotating weekly voyages.
Because of this system, it remains unclear whether the passenger had just boarded the ship or was continuing on his cruise.
What made the situation even more unusual was that emergency responders were already present at the port.
Firefighters — locally known as the “Red Helmets” — along with medical teams, had been called earlier for a separate medical evacuation involving another passenger.
When the man fell approximately 98 feet from the ship, first responders reacted immediately. Despite their rapid response and medical efforts, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities Conclude the Fall Was Deliberate
Following the incident, officials from the Port of Civitavecchia police and the Italian Coast Guard launched an investigation to determine exactly what happened.
After reviewing the circumstances, authorities concluded that the fall appeared to be intentional rather than accidental.
Costa Cruises later confirmed the tragic news in an official statement, expressing condolences and support for the family.
“It is with deep sadness that we confirm the death of a German guest today at the port of Civitavecchia,” the cruise line stated.
“According to initial findings, the guest voluntarily jumped while the ship was docked. The captain and company are cooperating fully with authorities and supporting the family.”
The investigation required Costa Smeralda to remain in port longer than scheduled, delaying its departure until approximately 8:30 p.m. that evening.
Costa Smeralda Continues Its Mediterranean Voyage
Despite the tragic incident, the ship resumed its itinerary once authorities completed their investigation.
Costa Smeralda, which entered service in 2019, is one of Costa Cruises’ largest and most modern vessels.
The ship can accommodate more than 5,200 guests and operates popular Mediterranean itineraries.
Following its departure from Civitavecchia, the vessel continued its scheduled stops, including:
- Savona, Italy
- Palermo, Italy
- Marseille, France
- Barcelona, Spain
- La Goulette, Tunisia
Cruise operations continued normally after the ship left Rome.
One of Several Overboard Incidents Reported in Early 2026
Unfortunately, this incident is part of a series of similar tragedies reported across the cruise industry in early 2026.
Earlier in the year:
- A 77-year-old woman went missing from Holland America Line’s Nieuw Statendam near Cuba on January 1.
- A 66-year-old man reportedly jumped from Windstar Cruises’ Star Breeze in French Polynesia on January 19.
In both cases, search efforts were unsuccessful.
