According to one passenger who shared the incident on social media, they were enjoying the warm weather on Deck 16, looking down at the busy pool deck below.
Everything felt normal — until the sharp blast of a whistle cut through the noise.
“We’re just sitting here … sun is out … having a good time. Then we hear a whistle blow,” the guest wrote. Her sister didn’t miss a beat: “Oh, I think somebody pooped in the pool.”
As horrifying as that sounds, longtime cruisers know this isn’t just gross — it’s one of the biggest sanitary “no-nos” at sea.
When a guest poops in the pool (child or adult), the fun ends for everyone. Water must be evacuated, drained, cleaned, sanitized, tested, and rebalanced — and that entire process can take hours.
It’s a huge headache for the staff too, because crew members already handle daily chemical checks, filtration maintenance, and safety inspections on top of their regular duties.
So when a code brown happens, everything stops.

If there’s one silver lining in this messy situation, it’s how quickly Royal Caribbean’s crew reacted.
Staff sprang into action the moment the whistle blew, and the lifeguards didn’t hesitate to clear the water.
“Sure enough — lifeguards blow the whistle. Scoop whatever it was out with the net. Then the staff shows up with gloves. Everybody out. Rope it off,” the guest explained.
Within minutes, the pool was emptied and shut down so sanitation protocols could begin.
Interestingly, commenters online pointed out that Royal Caribbean handled the situation faster than other cruise lines they’d sailed with.
One example came from a Carnival Sunrise guest:
“Once on Carnival Sunrise we saw a dad pull his 3-year-old out of the pool with liquid poop dripping everywhere and they took their sweet time closing the pool… We left the area due to the smell!”

Royal Caribbean’s Rules Are Clear — But Accidents Still Happen

Children who aren’t fully toilet-trained — or who rely on swim diapers — are only allowed in designated Baby Splash areas on select ships.
Royal Caribbean states clearly:
“Due to public health regulations, children who are in diapers or not 100% toilet trained may only use Baby Splash facilities.”
They’re not permitted in:
- Main pools
- Jacuzzis
- H2O Zone Water Parks
But even with rules in place, accidents happen. And as gross as it is, the crew is trained to respond quickly when they do.
Are Adults-Only Pools Actually Safer?
This incident reignited a long-running debate among cruisers about whether it’s ever truly safe to swim in a cruise ship pool — even in adults-only zones.
The original poster admitted that after watching kids in the main pool, she’d rather take her chances in the Solarium hot tubs, which are restricted to adults.
“A bunch of kids all sharing the same water? No thanks,” she joked. “The hot tub in the Solarium? Sure. Adults only. I’ll take my chances there.”
But even adults aren’t immune to questionable behavior.
A former hot tub salesperson chimed in with this grim reminder:
“I NEVER go in public hot tubs. The bacteria from bodies — and yes, many adults pee in hot tubs, especially when drinking — plus the pores releasing oils… Hot water speeds bacteria growth.”
And let’s not forget last year’s viral story about a woman who reportedly peed in her premium pool lounger because she didn’t want to give up her spot.
Crew members had to escort her away, and that pool had to be closed, too.
So while adults-only areas may reduce the likelihood of a code brown, they’re not exactly germ-free fountains of purity either.
Cruise Lines Maintain High Sanitation Standards — But Comfort Levels Vary
Even though stories like this can turn your stomach, it’s important to remember that cruise lines are held to strict health and safety guidelines.
Cruise pools undergo:
