Celebrity Infinity Set to Sail Again After Technical Problems

After a tense stretch that saw one cruise cut short and another scrapped altogether, Celebrity Infinity is officially returning to service.

Guests booked on the February 27, 2026, departure from Athens have now received confirmation: the sailing is moving forward as planned.

For many travelers who were watching developments closely, that email brought a huge sigh of relief.

A Ship With a History of Power Issues

Some travelers are understandably cautious. Celebrity Infinity, launched in 2001, has experienced power and propulsion incidents over the years.

Reports of similar disruptions date back to:

  • 2001–2006
  • 2010
  • 2012
  • 2018
  • 2025 (including a fire-related blackout in July)

In July 2025, the ship remained docked in Kusadasi for several days following a small onboard fire that led to another power interruption.

That said, older ships often undergo continuous upgrades and certifications to remain operational and safe.

In fact, Celebrity Infinity was in dry dock from January 2–11, 2026 — just weeks before this latest issue — for routine maintenance and technical inspections.

The Comeback Voyage From Athens

The first cruise back will be a 10-night Eastern Mediterranean itinerary departing from Piraeus (Athens), Greece.

Planned ports include:

  • Nafplio
  • Heraklion
  • Rhodes
  • Kavala
  • Thessaloniki
  • Kusadasi

Celebrity Cruises assured guests that preparations are underway to deliver a smooth and memorable voyage.

But what exactly caused the disruption in the first place?

What Happened at 3 a.m.

The trouble began in the early morning hours of February 15.

At around 3 a.m., while approaching Athens, the ship suddenly experienced a significant power failure.

Guests onboard reported:

  • No electricity
  • No air conditioning
  • No Wi-Fi
  • Toilets are temporarily out of service

For any cruise passenger, that’s an uncomfortable situation — especially in the middle of the night.

Thankfully, the vessel was already near the Greek coastline, allowing tugboats to assist in bringing the ship safely into port.

Passengers disembarked a day early and were reimbursed for:

  • Hotel accommodations
  • Meals ashore
  • Ground transportation

The following February 16 sailing was cancelled entirely to allow engineers time to investigate and repair the issue.

The Reported Cause: Electrical Panel Failure

While the cruise line did not initially detail the exact cause, a statement from Greek maritime authorities pointed to a malfunction involving the ship’s electrical distribution panels.

These panels are critical because they:

  • Distribute electrical power throughout the vessel.
  • Monitor load balance.
  • Protect onboard systems from overload.

In simple terms, they function as the ship’s central electrical nerve center. When something goes wrong there, it affects nearly everything.

The issue has now reportedly been resolved.

Should Upcoming Guests Be Concerned?

Cruise lines do not send ships back into service unless maritime authorities and internal safety teams are satisfied that systems are fully operational.

While social media discussions may amplify concern, the reality is:

  • The problem has reportedly been repaired.
  • Safety authorities were involved.
  • The ship has been cleared to resume operations.

For guests sailing February 27 and beyond, the cruise line is signaling confidence in the vessel’s readiness.

Moving Forward in the Mediterranean

Celebrity Infinity remains part of the Millennium-class fleet and continues operating popular Greek and Turkish itineraries.

At 90,940 gross tons and carrying up to 2,170 guests, she may not be the newest ship in the fleet — but she remains a well-known option for Eastern Mediterranean sailings.

For now, attention shifts from technical headlines back to island sunsets, ancient ruins, and Aegean Sea views.

And come February 27, vacation mode resumes.
