Celebrity Cruises Cancels 2027 Voyage After Private Charter Takes Over Entire Ship

Passengers who had already secured their spots aboard Celebrity Equinox for a summer 2027 Mediterranean adventure are now facing an unexpected disruption after Celebrity Cruises canceled the sailing to accommodate a full-ship private charter.

The affected voyage was scheduled to depart Barcelona on August 12, 2027, for a nine-night journey through Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.

Instead of welcoming vacationers aboard as planned, the Solstice-class vessel will now be handed over to a private organization that has reserved the entire ship.

While cruise lines occasionally make itinerary adjustments or cancel individual port calls, having an entire sailing removed from public sale is a much bigger event and can affect thousands of travelers who may have already begun making vacation arrangements.

Guests booked on the canceled cruise recently received official notification from Celebrity Cruises explaining that the sailing would no longer operate as originally planned.

According to the cruise line, the decision was made because the vessel has been fully chartered for a private event.

While Celebrity acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the cancellation, the company emphasized that it is working to provide several alternative options for affected passengers.

At this stage, the cruise line has not revealed the identity of the charter organization, nor has it announced whether the voyage may eventually become available for booking through the charter operator itself.

Original Itinerary Offered a Popular Mix of Destinations

The canceled sailing was designed as a destination-focused Mediterranean itinerary featuring a mix of Iberian and North African ports.

Passengers were scheduled to explore:

  • Lisbon, Portugal
  • Porto-Leixões, Portugal
  • Cadiz, Spain
  • Tangier, Morocco
  • Additional ports across Spain and Portugal

For many travelers, the itinerary offered an appealing combination of historic European cities and cultural experiences in Morocco, making the cancellation particularly disappointing for those who specifically selected the voyage because of its destinations.

Guests Encouraged to Move to Alternative Sailings

Rather than simply issuing refunds and ending the matter there, Celebrity Cruises is actively encouraging affected guests to transfer their reservations to similar voyages aboard Celebrity Equinox.

Among the recommended alternatives are two other nine-night sailings departing Barcelona in June and September 2027.

These cruises visit many of the same destinations that were included on the canceled itinerary, although the order of port calls differs slightly.

For guests interested in something different, Celebrity is also promoting an August 3, 2027, sailing between Rome and Barcelona.

That voyage includes visits to:

  • Naples, Italy
  • La Spezia, Italy
  • Portofino, Italy
  • Villefranche-sur-Mer, France
  • Palma de Mallorca, Spain

These alternatives provide travelers with the opportunity to remain aboard the same ship while still enjoying a Mediterranean vacation.

Added Incentives for Rebooking

To soften the disappointment, Celebrity Cruises is offering additional perks to passengers willing to move to another sailing.

Guests who transfer to one of the recommended cruises will have their original stateroom pricing protected, even if fares for the replacement sailing have increased since the original booking.

If the new cruise costs less than what guests already paid, Celebrity will refund the difference once the final payment has been processed.

The cruise line is also providing onboard credit as a goodwill gesture:

  • Suite guests receive $400 per stateroom.
  • AquaClass and standard cabin guests receive $200 per stateroom.

These credits can be used onboard for dining, beverages, spa treatments, shore excursions, and other purchases during the voyage.

Refunds Remain Available

Not every traveler will be able to shift vacation dates or modify travel plans around the cancellation.

For those passengers, Celebrity Cruises is offering a full refund option.

Guests who prefer to book a completely different Celebrity sailing may also do so without facing change fees or penalties related to their original reservation.

However, travelers selecting a voyage outside of the cruise line’s recommended alternatives may need to pay any fare difference if the new cruise is priced higher than their original booking.

Why Cruise Lines Accept Full-Ship Charters

Although these cancellations can be frustrating for passengers, full-ship charters remain highly attractive from a business perspective.

Unlike regular sailings, where revenue depends on how many cabins are sold, charter organizations purchase every stateroom on the vessel.

That means the cruise line receives guaranteed revenue regardless of whether the charter company ultimately fills every cabin.

For cruise operators, it eliminates the risk of unsold inventory and often generates substantial income from a single sailing.

Major cruise brands regularly work with organizations that specialize in large-scale charter events, themed voyages, corporate gatherings, music festivals, and private travel experiences.

A Growing Trend Across the Industry

Celebrity Cruises is far from the only cruise line making these kinds of adjustments.

Over the past several years, both Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean have canceled publicly available sailings to accommodate charter agreements.

Similar situations have occurred on ships across multiple fleets, often years before the scheduled departure date.

The good news for impacted Celebrity Equinox guests is that the cancellation is still more than a year away, giving travelers plenty of time to adjust plans, select an alternative sailing, or request a refund.

While nobody enjoys having a long-awaited vacation altered, the advance notice means most passengers should be able to find another cruise that fits their schedule without major disruption.
