If you’ve ever stood on a cruise pier watching ships dock and undock, it usually looks calm and routine. But occasionally, Mother Nature has other plans.
That’s what happened in Buenos Aires, Argentina, when a 14-night cruise aboard Celebrity Equinox didn’t quite start the way anyone expected.
During embarkation, the ship broke free from its mooring lines, began drifting away from the pier, and lightly scraped against a nearby refueling vessel — enough to delay departure and spark plenty of conversation online.
What Went Wrong at the Cruise Port?

Strong Winds Hit During Boarding
Passengers were still boarding the ship in Buenos Aires when strong winds swept through the port, with gusts reported at up to 40 mph.
As conditions worsened, one or more mooring lines snapped, allowing the ship to slowly drift away from the pier.
As the bow of the 122,000-gross-ton cruise ship swung outward, the aft section made contact with the dock.
At the same time, the side of the ship brushed against a nearby refueling tanker, creating a long visible scratch along the hull.
Videos of the incident quickly made their way onto social media, with some viewers expressing concern.
One comment summed it up well: “Hopefully it’s just paint, and there’s no structural damage.”
The Gangway Incident Added to the Drama

As the ship shifted position, the embarkation gangway was pulled away from the pier, leaving it hanging against the side of the ship — partially submerged in the water. For guests still waiting to board, it was an unsettling sight.
Tugboats were called in immediately to stabilize the situation and carefully guide the ship back into position.
Because the incident occurred mid-boarding, embarkation was paused for several hours while:
- A new gangway was secured
- The ship was inspected for safety
- Crew confirmed conditions were stable
Only once everything was cleared did boarding resume.
Was Anyone Hurt?
The good news: no injuries were reported among the more than 2,800 passengers or approximately 1,200 crew members onboard.
Initial assessments suggest the damage to the hull is mostly cosmetic, though the visible scratch understandably raised eyebrows.
Cruise ships are built with multiple layers of protection, and even noticeable hull marks don’t automatically mean structural issues.
How the Delay Affected the 14-Night Cruise

Departure Pushed Back, But Cruise Continues
Although the situation was brought under control relatively quickly, Celebrity Equinox did not depart on Saturday evening as planned.
Instead, the ship remained docked overnight and officially set sail just before 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.
That delay caused only minor itinerary adjustments:
- The scheduled stop in Montevideo was not canceled
- Time in Montevideo was slightly shortened
- The rest of the Patagonia and Antarctica itinerary is currently expected to proceed as planned
For a long and highly anticipated itinerary like this, many passengers were relieved that the impact was minimal.
Passengers React: “Crazy Situation”
Several guests onboard shared photos and firsthand accounts online as the situation unfolded.
One passenger described the moment like this:
“The gangway went off the pier and was hanging against the ship partially submerged. Crazy situation, but sounds like we’ll resume boarding soon.”
For many, it was a reminder that even the most carefully planned cruise departures can run into unexpected challenges — especially when weather plays a role.
When Will Celebrity Equinox Return?
Despite the delayed start, Celebrity Equinox is still scheduled to return to Buenos Aires on January 3, 2026, following the completion of its 14-night voyage.
For guests onboard, the incident made for a dramatic first chapter to what’s still expected to be an unforgettable cruise — just one that began with a bit more excitement than anyone planned.
