Guests booked on a unique Carnival Cruise Line voyage in 2027 have received disappointing news after the cruise line officially cancelled one of Carnival Splendor’s highly anticipated repositioning sailings.
The affected voyage was scheduled to depart Singapore on September 1, 2027, and sail to Sydney, Australia, over 16 nights.
While repositioning cruises are often among the most interesting itineraries offered by cruise lines, passengers will now need to make alternate plans after Carnival confirmed the sailing will no longer take place.
The cancellation initially sparked confusion among guests, but Carnival has now clarified what is really behind the decision.
Carnival Confirms September 2027 Sailing Is Cancelled
Passengers booked on the one-way voyage recently received official notifications from Carnival Cruise Line explaining the change.
According to the cruise line, the cancellation is linked to adjustments involving Carnival Splendor’s scheduled dry dock maintenance program in 2027.
“Due to a change in the dry dock schedule for Carnival Splendor in August 2027, we are sorry to inform you that your voyage from Singapore to Sydney, departing September 1, 2027, has been cancelled,” Carnival told affected guests.
Because the voyage was tied directly to the ship’s return to Australia following maintenance work, even a small shift in the dry dock schedule appears to have made the sailing impossible to operate as originally planned.
A Unique Itinerary Guests Were Looking Forward To
The cancelled sailing was not just another cruise on the schedule.
Many passengers had booked specifically because of the rare itinerary, which combined several unique destinations with a memorable equator crossing experience.
The voyage was expected to visit:
- Bali, Indonesia
- Lombok, Indonesia
- Darwin, Australia
- Cairns, Australia
For many travelers, crossing the equator is considered a bucket-list cruise experience, making the cancellation particularly disappointing.
Repositioning cruises often attract experienced cruisers because they feature unusual routes, additional sea days, and ports that may not appear on regular itineraries.
Dry Dock Schedule Changes Are More Common Than Many Realize
While cancellations are never welcome news, changes involving shipyard schedules happen throughout the cruise industry.
Dry docks are essential for maintenance, safety inspections, technical upgrades, and refurbishment projects.
However, schedules can shift for several reasons, including:

- Refunds for all pre-purchased packages and extras.
- Refunds of non-refundable deposits.
This ensures guests are not financially penalized because of the cancellation.
Confusion Emerges Over the Real Reason
The cancellation created additional confusion after some guests contacted Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald for answers.
In some early responses, Heald suggested the sailing may have been affected by a charter agreement, leading some travelers to speculate that the ship had been booked for a private event.
However, Heald later clarified that he had not yet reviewed the official communication from the cruise line before responding.
After reviewing the information, he confirmed that the cancellation was connected to Carnival Splendor’s revised dry dock schedule.
The misunderstanding sparked online discussions among passengers who were trying to determine whether a charter, redeployment, or maintenance project was responsible for the change.
Is Carnival Splendor Leaving Australia?
Some guests also worried that the cancellation could indicate larger deployment changes for Carnival Splendor.
At this point, there is no evidence that the ship is leaving Australia.
The 113,573-gross-ton vessel remains scheduled to operate cruises from Sydney through at least June 2028 based on currently published itineraries.
When questioned directly about possible redeployment plans, Heald stated that he had no information suggesting the ship would be moved elsewhere.
Carnival has not announced any changes to Carnival Splendor’s long-term Australian operations.

While Carnival has confirmed that dry dock scheduling is responsible for the cancellation, the cruise line has not yet revealed exactly what changes have been made to the maintenance timetable.
Several possibilities remain:
