If you’ve cruised with Carnival before, you probably remember the last time gratuities went up. It’s been a while — and that’s exactly why this update is catching so many people off guard.
Carnival Cruise Line has confirmed a new increase to its daily gratuity charges, marking the first adjustment in nearly three years.
The changes won’t hit immediately, but they will affect upcoming sailings — especially if you haven’t prepaid yet.
When the New Gratuity Rates Kick In

Starting April 2, 2026, Carnival will raise its automatic daily gratuities by $1 per person, per day.
While that may sound minor, it adds up quickly on longer cruises or family sailings.
Here’s how the new pricing breaks down:
- Standard staterooms (interior, ocean view, and balcony): $17.00 per person, per day (up from $16.00)
- Suites (including Junior Suites): $19.00 per person, per day (up from $18.00)
These charges apply to every guest, regardless of age, which is important for families cruising with children.
Already Booked? You Might Be Able to Avoid the Increase
This is the part many cruisers will want to pay attention to.
If your sailing is already booked and you prepay gratuities before April 2, 2026, Carnival will honor the current, lower rate.
That means you can lock in today’s pricing and avoid the increase altogether.
However:
- If you wait and let gratuities post onboard.
- Or if you book a new cruise on or after April 2, 2026.
You’ll automatically be charged the higher rate.
For anyone cruising in 2026 or beyond, prepaying now could save a noticeable amount — especially on 7- to 10-night itineraries.
How Carnival Communicated the Change
Passengers were notified via email sent on Monday, February 2, which bundled the gratuity increase together with another onboard price change.
In the message, Carnival explained that both gratuities and beverage pricing would be adjusted, but added a key reassurance: existing prices will be honored if purchased in advance.
That detail alone has pushed many cruisers to log into their booking and prepay extras sooner rather than later.
A Look Back: When Were Gratuities Last Raised?
Carnival’s last gratuity increase happened in April 2023. At that time, daily charges were set at:
- $14.50 per person for standard cabins.
- $16.50 per person for suites.
Since then, the rates have stayed steady — until now. Compared to that earlier jump, this increase is smaller, but it continues a wider industry trend of rising onboard costs.
It’s Not Just Gratuity — Drink Costs Are Rising Too

Alongside gratuities, Carnival also confirmed a price increase for its soda package, Bottomless Bubbles (adults only).
Here’s what’s changing:
- New base price: $11.99 per day.
- With the mandatory 20% service charge, the total comes to over $14 per day.
And that service charge increase? That already happened quietly.
Back in December, Carnival raised its onboard service charge from 18% to 20%, meaning:
- Drink packages cost more.
- Specialty dining costs more.
- Any add-on with a service charge now hits your bill harder.
Even if your cruise fare hasn’t changed, the onboard experience is getting more expensive.
Why Cruisers Are Feeling the Pinch
For many passengers, the frustration isn’t just about the extra dollar — it’s about how these increases stack up.
Between:
- Higher gratuities.
- Increased drink package pricing.
- A larger mandatory service charge.
Cruisers are paying more onboard than they were just a year ago, often without much advance notice.
That said, Carnival has emphasized that gratuities go directly to the crew and supplement base pay — a point many loyal guests appreciate, even if they’re not thrilled about the timing.
How Carnival Compares to Other Cruise Lines
Carnival isn’t alone in raising gratuities. In fact, the entire industry has been nudging prices upward.
Recently, Margaritaville at Sea raised its daily gratuities to:
- $22 per person, per night for standard staterooms (up from $20).
- $25 per person, per night for suites (previously $24).
That now makes Margaritaville the highest gratuity rate in the cruise industry.
For comparison:
- Norwegian Cruise Line charges around $20 per person for standard cabins.
- Royal Caribbean currently sits at $18.50 per person.
By comparison, Carnival still lands on the lower-to-middle end — but the gap is narrowing.
The Bottom Line for Future Carnival Cruisers
If you’re planning a Carnival cruise in 2026 or beyond, this update is a reminder to check your booking details carefully.
A few smart moves to consider:
- Prepay gratuities early to lock in current rates.
- Recalculate drink package costs with the new service charge.
- Budget a little extra for onboard spending, even if your fare looks unchanged.
The cruise itself may still offer great value — but onboard pricing is clearly trending upward. Planning ahead is now more important than ever.
