When I first heard Carnival was changing its Very Important Fun Person (VIFP) loyalty program, my gut reaction was like a lot of other long-time cruisers — nervous, confused, and honestly a little frustrated.
I’ve been part of the Carnival community for years, and like many of you, I’ve loved watching my status grow.
So when the news broke that lifetime status was being eliminated, I knew it was time to really dig into what’s changing… and why.
Let me walk you through everything I’ve learned so far — straight from what Carnival’s President, Christine Duffy, shared onboard Carnival Vista on July 14.
Lifetime Status Is Ending — And Here’s Why Carnival Says It Had To
Christine Duffy didn’t sugarcoat it:
“It is not our intention at all for people not to maintain their status… Just lifetime status is not feasible given the number of people and the growth in the highest tiers.”
What she means:
- Carnival’s guest base has exploded — 110 million guests by 2025, with 65 million in the last 13 years alone.
- With more ships (including new Excel-class and Ace-class vessels) coming, Carnival says lifetime perks for everyone just aren’t sustainable anymore.
Carnival Rewards Launches June 1, 2026 — Here’s What We Know

Carnival has confirmed that the current VIFP Club will officially be replaced by Carnival Rewards on June 1, 2026.
That’s when the old cruise day-based tracking system will disappear — for good.
So, what’s changing?
- You’ll earn 3 points for every $1 you spend on:
- Cruise fare
- Onboard extras (spa, drinks, specialty dining)
- Casino play
- Every day spending with the Carnival Rewards Mastercard
What I like about this system:
- Those points aren’t just for bragging rights — you’ll be able to redeem them for perks like future cruise credits and onboard amenities.
- It seems like Carnival is aiming for more flexibility with rewards than the old program offered.
👉 My Take: If you’re a big onboard spender (or love using your cruise credit card), this could actually work out better for you in the long run.
But it definitely shifts the loyalty game toward those who spend more, not just sail more.
Earning “Stars” Will Decide Your Tier — And You’ll Have to Keep Earning Them

Carnival’s new system isn’t just about points for perks — they’re also introducing “Stars” that determine your loyalty tier.
Here’s how it’ll work (from what we know so far):
- Stars are earned based on your spending activity, not the total cruises you’ve taken.
- They’ll work on a rolling two-year cycle — meaning you’ll need to keep cruising (and spending) to maintain your tier.
- Unlike the old system, where your tier was locked in once earned, now you’ll have to actively maintain it.
👉 Important Note: Carnival hasn’t announced the exact number of points or stars needed for each tier yet — but they’ve promised those details will come before the end of 2025.
Existing Status Won’t Vanish Overnight — But There Are Deadlines
Carnival isn’t cutting everyone off cold turkey. Here’s the grace period they’ve announced:
- Current VIFP tiers stay valid until May 31, 2028.
- Diamond members get even longer — until May 31, 2032.
👉 My Tip: If you’re close to a milestone, plan your cruises before these dates hit.
Kids Won’t Be Part of the New Program
Another big change? Guests under 18 won’t be eligible for the new Carnival Rewards program.
Why?
- It aligns with legal guidelines and credit regulations.
👉 My Thought: Makes sense — but it’s a bummer for families who loved collecting VIFP points together.
