Passengers sailing on Carnival Panorama were caught in a tropical storm that caused the ship to tilt sharply, leaving broken glass, spilled water, and plenty of shaken nerves.
The dramatic event happened on August 20, 2025, while the vessel was en route from Mazatlán to La Paz on its 7-day Mexican Riviera cruise.
“It Was Wild and Scary” – Passenger Videos Surface
Guests wasted no time documenting the storm’s impact on social media:
- 🍽 Dining room chaos – TikTok user queens_roost filmed shattered plates across the floor, writing:
“We just finished our appetizer… we got stuck in the eye of tonight’s Gulf of California storm. It was wild and absolutely gorgeous!”
- 🛁 Jacuzzi overflow – Another passenger shared a clip of spa water sloshing out as the ship listed. Their caption added:
“POV: you’re relaxing after dinner, and the storm tilts the ship so badly the jacuzzi spills over. Pools are empty, water dripping from ceilings and elevators.”
While some cruisers called the scene fascinating, others admitted it was “pretty scary” and said they chose to stay in their cabins until things calmed down.
What Happened Onboard
According to passengers posting in a Carnival Panorama Facebook group, the tilt was sudden and strong enough to:
- Temporarily trap people inside elevators.
- Interrupt the Celestial Show, which was stopped mid-performance.
- Send water pooling near balcony doors in some Havana section cabins.
- Shatter glass at an outdoor bar.
Despite the drama, other guests reassured worried family and friends online that the crew responded quickly.
One passenger posted: “Everything is fine – the ship stabilized and cleanup was fast.”
Carnival Cruise Line Responds
Carnival later issued an official statement confirming the details:
- At 8:15 p.m. PDT, heavy rain and strong winds hit the vessel, causing a brief list to one side.
- Nine guests were treated in the medical center, with two later referred to hospitals in La Paz.
- Water entered the main lobby and elevator shafts, taking some lifts out of service temporarily.
- The captain maneuvered into calmer seas, and the crew quickly handled cleanup.
Carnival emphasized that all passengers are stable and that all ship systems remain functional aside from a few elevators still undergoing repairs.
Itinerary Back on Track
Despite the storm, Carnival Panorama stayed on schedule. She arrived in La Paz on August 21 and will continue her itinerary with stops in Cabo San Lucas before returning to Los Angeles.
For most on board, the event was a jarring reminder that even modern mega-ships are not immune to the forces of nature, though a quick crew response helped ensure safety.
