Puerto Vallarta has long been a favorite stop on Mexican Riviera cruises — colorful streets, oceanfront dining, and easy shore excursions. But for now, Carnival Cruise Line is pressing pause.
Rather than canceling just one visit, the cruise line has decided to suspend all calls to Puerto Vallarta for the next few weeks as unrest continues in the region. And there’s no confirmed return date yet.
Carnival Panorama’s Itinerary Gets Rearranged
The first impacted sailing is aboard Carnival Panorama, departing Long Beach on February 28, 2026.
Originally scheduled as an 8-night Mexican Riviera cruise with stops in:
- Puerto Vallarta
- Mazatlán
- La Paz
- Cabo San Lucas
The ship will now skip Puerto Vallarta entirely.
Here’s how the schedule shifts:
- Cabo San Lucas moves earlier in the week.
- A sea day replaces the Puerto Vallarta stop.
- Extra time added in Mazatlán and Cabo.
Guests gain:
- 30 extra minutes in Mazatlán.
- 1 additional hour in Cabo San Lucas.
While losing a port is disappointing, Carnival has attempted to soften the impact by maximizing time in other destinations.
Shore Excursions & Refunds

Guests who pre-booked tours in Puerto Vallarta through Carnival will receive:
- Automatic cancellations.
- Full refunds back to their onboard accounts.
Excursions in other ports will either proceed as planned or adjust based on the new arrival times.
Why Is Puerto Vallarta Being Skipped?
The decision follows escalating violence in Jalisco state after the reported death of cartel leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera on February 22.
Jalisco — which includes Puerto Vallarta — is currently listed under a U.S. Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” advisory.
While cruise ships had continued visiting earlier in the week, Carnival Corporation ultimately decided to delay returning to the port for several weeks.
That decision likely extends beyond Carnival Cruise Line itself.
Because it was made at the corporate level, other Carnival Corporation brands could follow the same pause.
How Long Will This Last?
At this point:
- There is no official restart date.
- Future sailings may continue to be adjusted.
- Guests will be notified individually as changes are confirmed.
Carnival Panorama visits Puerto Vallarta on every 8-night itinerary, so multiple sailings could be affected if the suspension continues.
However, the ship’s shorter 6-night cruises — which visit Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas — remain unaffected.
What About Other Mexican Ports?
For now, no other widespread cancellations have been announced for Mexican Riviera destinations.
Ports like:
- Mazatlán
- Cabo San Lucas
- La Paz
Continue operating normally. Additionally, Cozumel sailings remain intact, although some mainland excursions have been proactively canceled as a precaution.
Safety First, Even If It Disrupts Plans
Cruise lines regularly adjust itineraries due to weather, port congestion, or safety concerns.
While guests may be frustrated — especially those who booked specifically for Puerto Vallarta — the cruise line’s top priority remains:
- Guest safety
- Crew security
- Operational stability
Itinerary flexibility is built into cruise contracts for precisely these situations.
For now, Carnival Panorama and likely other Carnival ships will continue exploring the Mexican Riviera — just without Puerto Vallarta on the schedule.
