Carnival Cruise Line is quietly making one of the biggest itinerary shifts in its history.
Beginning in 2027, the cruise line will officially add Africa to its scheduled destinations — something it has never done before outside of repositioning voyages.
The move comes as part of a major redeployment plan for Carnival Sunshine, which will leave the U.S. and spend an extended season sailing Europe, the Mediterranean, and North Africa before returning to American waters.
A Historic First for Carnival’s Route Map

Although Carnival ships have occasionally passed through African ports during one-way crossings, this marks the first time African destinations are included as planned ports of call that guests can book in advance.
The newly announced itineraries confirm scheduled stops in:
- Tangier
- La Goulette
This change signals a broader evolution in Carnival’s strategy, moving beyond short, high-volume itineraries and into destination-focused cruising aimed at repeat guests looking for something new.
Mediterranean Sailings Become More Ambitious
From May through October 2027, Carnival Sunshine will operate a full Mediterranean season, sailing from both:
- Barcelona
- Civitavecchia
Rather than repeating the same ports, Carnival is expanding its reach across Southern Europe and the Adriatic, adding destinations that rarely appear on the line’s schedules.
New and less-common stops include:
- Bari
- Bar
- Ajaccio
Sailings will range from standard 7-night cruises to extended voyages designed for travelers who want deeper regional exploration rather than quick port hops.
Africa Integrated Into the Mediterranean Experience
Unlike traditional repositioning sailings, Africa is not being treated as a one-off stop.
Instead, North African ports are woven directly into Mediterranean itineraries, creating routes that blend:
- Southern Europe
- The western Mediterranean
- North Africa
This approach aligns closely with Carnival’s Journeys-style sailings, which focus on cultural immersion, longer itineraries, and less repetitive routes.
A Rare Solar Eclipse Cruise at Sea

One of the most distinctive sailings in the 2027 lineup centers on a total solar eclipse scheduled for August 2, 2027.
Carnival Sunshine’s July 25, 2027, departure from Barcelona is specifically timed and routed to place the ship within the eclipse’s path of totality, offering open-sea viewing conditions that are difficult to replicate on land.
Why this matters:
- Longer eclipse duration at sea.
- Fewer obstructions than land-based viewing.
- Historically, clearer skies in the Mediterranean.
While other cruise lines and ships will also chase the eclipse, Sunshine’s positioning makes it one of the most strategically placed vessels for the event.
How Carnival Sunshine Transitions Between Regions
The 2027 season includes a carefully planned series of Atlantic crossings that connect the ship’s global itinerary.
Key movements include:
- A 15-day eastbound transatlantic departing Norfolk on May 15, 2027, arriving in Dover.
- A full Mediterranean and North Africa season runs late May through October.
- A westbound transatlantic from Barcelona in late October, featuring a final African call in Tangier before returning to the U.S.
These transitions allow Carnival to maximize seasonal demand while introducing new regions without adding new ships.
A Permanent Shift to Texas After Europe
When Carnival Sunshine completes its overseas season, it will not return to its previous East Coast homeports.
Instead, the ship will relocate to Galveston in November 2027, reflecting Carnival’s growing focus on the Texas cruise market.
This move:
- Replaces earlier deployment plans involving Carnival Spirit
- Bring a larger, higher-capacity ship to Galveston
- Responds to sustained demand for longer Caribbean and regional itineraries from Texas
At over 102,000 gross tons, Sunshine becomes one of the most significant ships to operate from the port.
Why This Announcement Matters
Carnival’s 2027 plans represent more than new ports — they reflect a clear shift in how the cruise line is positioning itself for the future.
What’s changing:
- Africa officially joins Carnival’s scheduled destinations.
- Mediterranean cruises become more diverse and less repetitive.
- Event-driven sailings (like the solar eclipse) take priority.
- Deployment decisions increasingly follow regional demand.
For guests who associate Carnival with short, familiar itineraries, the 2027 Sunshine season shows a cruise line that is testing new boundaries — geographically and strategically.
