There are some embarkation day surprises you hope for — an unexpected cabin upgrade, maybe — and then there are the ones you really don’t want.
Unfortunately for thousands of guests boarding P&O Cruises’ Ventura on 9 August 2025, their holiday began with one of the latter: a bomb threat that shut down the ship and terminal.
A Morning Embarkation Turns Into an Emergency ⏰
I can imagine the excitement guests must have felt stepping into Southampton’s Mayflower Cruise Ferry Terminal that morning, ready for a 14-night voyage to Spain, Portugal, and the Canary Islands.
But just as the check-in process was humming along, everything changed.
At 11:46 a.m., Hampshire Constabulary officers rushed in after an unidentified man claimed he had an explosive device.
That’s the kind of announcement that makes your stomach drop.
Swift Police Action
Because it was peak summer season, Southampton — the UK’s busiest cruise homeport — already had a visible police presence.
But this threat triggered an immediate, heightened response:
- A 200-metre (656-foot) safety cordon was thrown up around the terminal.
- Bomb disposal experts searched both the suspect’s motor truck and the surrounding area.
- Ventura and the terminal building were evacuated “out of an abundance of caution,” since both sat inside the potential blast zone.
One passenger told The Daily Echo:
“The captain made an announcement that we were in the bomb zone and we had to get out.”
By early afternoon, relief came — police confirmed there was no credible threat and lifted the cordon.
A Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson summed it up:
“We are satisfied that there is no risk to the public.”
P&O Cruises Speaks Out 📢
Once the all-clear was given, P&O Cruises released a statement:
“Due to an earlier police incident and in an abundance of caution, we made the decision to evacuate Ventura and the passenger terminal. This incident has now been resolved and normal embarkation operations have resumed. The safety of our guests, crew, and port staff is our highest priority and we are grateful for the co-operation of the authorities.”
Having been through a few embarkation day delays myself, I know these situations can be tense. But P&O’s priority — keeping everyone safe — was clear.
Busy Port, Minimal Disruption to Others ⚓
Southampton was buzzing that day, with Princess Cruises’ Sky Princess, P&O Cruises’ Iona, and MSC Cruises’ MSC Virtuosa also in port.
Luckily, all were docked far enough away to avoid direct disruption.
Because only one cruise ship can berth at the Mayflower Terminal at a time, Ventura was the only vessel impacted.
A Slight Delay, But No Itinerary Changes ⏳
With embarkation halted for several hours, Ventura’s departure was pushed back.
Guests were told to expect a 6:15 p.m. sailaway, and by 6:30 p.m., cruise trackers showed the 116,017-gross-ton ship gliding out of the harbour.
P&O later confirmed there’d be no change to the itinerary — the ship would still reach Funchal, Madeira on 13 August.
A related road closure at Dock 10 briefly caused extra congestion but reopened later in the day.
The Arrest
Some guests got an unexpected view from Ventura’s decks: the suspect being detained by armed officers in the terminal car park.
Passenger Andy Palmer told The Mirror:
“I was enjoying an early lunch when I saw a guy being dragged out of his car by six armed policemen.”
The man was taken into custody. If convicted, UK law allows for severe penalties for bomb hoaxes — including hefty fines or even years in prison — because of the public panic and misuse of emergency resources they cause.
Final Thoughts: A Sobering Reminder on Cruise Safety
As dramatic as the situation sounds, it’s a reminder that cruise ports and ships take security extremely seriously.
Within hours, police and port staff had secured the area, checked the threat, and got operations back on track.
If you’ve cruised before, you know embarkation day is usually all about holiday vibes — boarding photos, finding your cabin, and grabbing a welcome drink.
On this day, it was about something far more important: keeping thousands of guests and crew safe.
