Cruise vacations rarely change because of politics, but that’s exactly what happened to one high-profile sailing this week.
A Virgin Voyages ship chartered for an LGBTQ+ cruise was forced to scrap two planned Turkish port calls after local authorities refused permission for the vessel to dock.
The decision has sparked international attention, with organizers calling it unprecedented and passengers suddenly finding themselves sailing to different destinations instead of the Turkish ports they had planned to explore.
Turkey Rejects Planned Port Calls for LGBTQ+ Charter Cruise
The voyage in question is taking place aboard Scarlet Lady, which departed Athens, Greece, on July 5 for a 10-night Mediterranean sailing chartered by Atlantis Events, a U.S.-based company that has organized LGBTQ+ cruises and vacations for decades.
Marketed as an all-gay charter cruise, the itinerary originally included visits to:
- Kuşadası, Turkey on July 7.
- Istanbul, Turkey later in the voyage.
Before the ship’s arrival, however, Turkish authorities informed organizers that the vessel would not be permitted to dock.
According to statements reported by multiple media outlets, officials said the charter did not align with the country’s “social structure and moral values.”
Authorities also stated there was no possibility of allowing the group to visit for an event of that nature.
As a result, both Turkish port calls were removed from the itinerary before the ship reached the country.
A First for Atlantis Events
For Atlantis Events, the decision came as a complete surprise.
The company noted that it has operated cruises visiting Turkish ports for many years without experiencing similar restrictions.
According to Atlantis, its charters have previously called at Istanbul and Kuşadası numerous times over the past 25 years.
Company President and CEO Rich Campbell said this was the first time in the organization’s 36-year history that a destination had refused entry specifically because of the identity of the charter group.
Campbell described the decision as deeply concerning, saying it was troubling to see a destination determine which tourists could visit based on who they are.
For many longtime Atlantis guests, the news marked an unexpected change to a vacation that had been planned months in advance.
Patti LuPone Speaks Out
Also onboard the sailing is acclaimed Broadway performer Patti LuPone, who is scheduled to entertain guests during the cruise.
After learning of the cancelled Turkish visits, LuPone shared her disappointment on social media, saying she was angry that a ship filled primarily with gay passengers had been denied entry.
Despite the itinerary change, she confirmed she would remain onboard and continue performing for guests throughout the voyage.
Her comments quickly spread across social media, adding even more attention to the developing story.
New Ports Added to the Itinerary
Rather than cancelling the cruise, organizers quickly revised the schedule to include alternative destinations.
Instead of stopping in Turkey, Scarlet Lady will now visit:
- Cairo, Egypt
- Crete, Greece
These replacement ports allow the sailing to continue with minimal disruption while still offering guests additional sightseeing opportunities around the eastern Mediterranean.
Although many passengers were disappointed to miss Turkey, the revised itinerary ensures the 10-night vacation continues without major operational issues.
Virgin Voyages Ship Continues Sailing Normally
The decision does not involve any operational or safety concerns with the ship itself.
Scarlet Lady, operated by Virgin Voyages, has previously visited Turkish ports during regular itineraries without incident.
The vessel remains on schedule, and no issues have been reported regarding onboard operations, entertainment, dining, or guest services following the itinerary revision.
At the time of publication, neither Virgin Voyages nor Turkish government officials had released additional statements beyond those already reported regarding the cancellation.
The Broader Context
The incident comes amid continuing international discussion surrounding LGBTQ+ rights in Turkey.
While same-sex relationships are legal in the country, human rights organizations have criticized restrictions placed on LGBTQ+ events in recent years.
Istanbul’s Pride marches, for example, have been prohibited since 2015, with authorities frequently citing security concerns.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and members of his government have also faced criticism from international organizations over their public rhetoric concerning LGBTQ+ communities.
Those broader political and social issues have now become part of the conversation surrounding this cruise’s unexpected itinerary change.
A Rare Reason for an Itinerary Change
Cruise itineraries are adjusted all the time, but the reasons are usually far less controversial.
