What was supposed to be a scenic 7-night Alaska adventure departing from Vancouver on June 3, 2026, has now turned into an unexpected return trip after the ship experienced propulsion-related difficulties.
While the vessel remains safe and operational, the issue has affected its ability to travel at normal cruising speeds, making it impossible to complete the original itinerary as planned.
Mechanical Trouble Changes the Course of the Cruise
The disruption began after Zaandam arrived in Juneau, Alaska. Guests initially expected a routine port visit before continuing on to several of the most anticipated destinations on the itinerary.
Instead, passengers were informed that the ship would remain in Juneau longer than scheduled while specialists examined a problem involving one of the vessel’s propulsion systems.
According to updates shared onboard, the issue was not related to passenger safety but was serious enough to impact the ship’s performance and schedule.
As technicians worked to diagnose and address the problem, travelers found themselves spending additional time in Alaska’s capital city while waiting for news about the remainder of their cruise.

Holland America Announces Compensation for Affected Guests
Recognizing that passengers are losing a significant portion of their Alaska experience, Holland America has introduced a compensation package for everyone currently sailing on the affected voyage.
The cruise line confirmed that guests will receive multiple forms of reimbursement due to the itinerary changes.
Compensation Includes
- A refund equal to 50% of the cruise fare paid.
- A future cruise credit worth 50% of the cruise fare.
- Automatic refunds for shore excursions booked through Holland America in canceled ports.
The future cruise credit can be used toward another sailing, giving guests an opportunity to return and experience destinations they missed during this voyage.
While frustration is understandable given the circumstances, many passengers have reportedly acknowledged the efforts made by the crew throughout the disruption.
Crew Continues Delivering the Cruise Experience
One positive aspect of the situation is that the mechanical issue appears limited to the ship’s propulsion system and has not affected most onboard services.
Guests continue to enjoy the majority of the amenities and activities normally available during a Holland America cruise.
Onboard Operations Remain Available
Passengers still have access to:
