The milestone was reached on Sunday, November 30, 2025, and it underscores how Florida’s cruise ports continue to push capacity limits as ships get bigger and sailings sell out faster than ever.
Florida’s Cruise Port Rivalry Is Heating Up
Watching Florida’s top cruise ports right now feels a bit like a heavyweight title fight.
Just weeks ago, Port Canaveral claimed the crown as the busiest cruise port in the world, reporting 8.6 million passenger movements in fiscal year 2025.
That announcement turned heads across the industry. But PortMiami wasted no time reminding everyone that it’s still very much in the race.
Last week, the port confirmed via social media that it had just broken its own daily passenger record — and by a wide margin.
PortMiami’s Record-Breaking Day Explained
In its official announcement, PortMiami revealed:
“We’re breaking records at PortMiami! On Sunday, November 30, 2025, PortMiami set a new daily passenger record with 75,201 passengers traveling through the Cruise Capital of the World®.”
That figure shattered the previous record of 68,000 passengers, which had been set earlier in February 2025.
Interestingly, both record-setting days involved 10 ships in port — but this time, the ships were noticeably larger.
The 10 Ships That Powered the Record
Here’s a look at the vessels docked at PortMiami on the record-breaking day, along with their double-occupancy capacities:

- Carnival Celebration – 5,374
- Carnival Horizon – 3,960
- Independence of the Seas – 3,634

At double occupancy, these ships can carry just over 35,000 passengers at one time.
Since this was a turnaround day — meaning guests were both getting off and boarding new sailings — doubling that number brings the total close to 70,000 passengers.
So how did PortMiami reach more than 75,000?
Why Cruise Ships Often Sail Over 100% Capacity
The answer lies in something cruise veterans already know: ships rarely sail at exactly double occupancy.
Many cabins accommodate:
- Families of three or four
- Groups sharing larger staterooms
- Extra berths in cabins designed for flexibility
As a result, it’s extremely common for cruise ships to sail at 105% to 110% capacity, especially during peak travel periods.
That additional headcount easily explains the extra 5,000+ passengers that pushed PortMiami to a new all-time daily record.
And here’s another eye-opening detail: no Icon-class ship was even in port that day.
Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas has a double capacity of 5,610 and a maximum capacity of around 7,600 passengers. If one of those mega-ships had been docked, the numbers could have climbed even higher.

For FY 2025, the port welcomed 8,564,225 cruise passengers, marking a 4% increase over 2024.
