When I first read about the ferry fire off North Sulawesi, Indonesia, my heart sank. It’s the kind of maritime tragedy you hope never happens — yet for over 280 passengers aboard the KM Barcelona V-A, it became a horrifying reality.
Here’s what happened and what we know so far.
The Fire Broke Out Around Noon — Panic Spread Instantly
On Sunday, around 12:00 PM (local time), the KM Barcelona V-A ferry was carrying passengers from Melonguane to Manado when disaster struck.
- Thick black smoke started pouring from the ferry, quickly followed by flames racing across the upper decks.
- Harrowing footage showed passengers jumping overboard — some still clutching personal belongings or holding children.
- The fire broke out so fast that people had little choice but to flee straight into the sea.
👉 One Survivor’s Words: Alwina Inang, wife of a local police official, shared that she survived in the water for nearly an hour after jumping from the ferry. She said,
“We were eating when smoke suddenly entered… we immediately jumped into the sea.”
At Least Five Lives Lost — Including a Pregnant Woman
As of the latest reports:
- Five fatalities confirmed, including a pregnant woman.
- Two people remain missing.
- Over 280 passengers were rescued, but the search continues.
Sadly, authorities fear the death toll may rise as search and rescue efforts continue.
The Rescue Operation — Fishermen & Officials Worked Together
I’ve seen a lot of cruise rescue footage, but this one hits differently:
- The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) released videos showing smoke plumes rising as crews pulled survivors from the sea.
- Local fishermen joined in, helping haul passengers — including a 2-month-old baby — from the rough waters.
- Survivors were transported to Ganga Island for safety.
Passenger Videos Show the Chaos — And the Brave Escapes
One of the most gut-wrenching videos came from Abdul Rahmad Agu, a passenger who went live on Facebook while clutching a toddler.
You could see the desperation as passengers scrambled for life jackets and jumped into the sea.
What we saw in those videos:
- Dozens of passengers were plunging into rough waters, many wearing bright orange life jackets.
- Thick smoke and roaring flames engulfed the ferry’s decks.
- The heartbreaking cries and sheer panic of those trying to escape.
It’s rare to witness such raw footage of a disaster — it brought home the reality of what those passengers endured.
The Ferry Was on a Familiar Route — This Made It Even More Shocking
The KM Barcelona V-A wasn’t some obscure cargo ship — it was a familiar sight on the Talaud Islands to Manado route.
Why this matters:
- Passengers knew this route well and likely didn’t expect danger.
- The sudden fire shocked even the regular commuters on board.
The Search for the Missing Continues — With Hopes for Survivors
Rescue teams, together with local fishermen, are still searching for the two passengers reported missing.
So far, here’s what’s been confirmed:
- Survivors, including a 2-month-old baby, have been pulled from the sea.
- Evacuated passengers are being cared for on Ganga Island.
- The North Sulawesi Search and Rescue Agency remains actively involved in the operation.
Every hour counts in rescue missions like this — and teams are doing everything they can to find the missing.
