As Hurricane Erin churns as a Category 3 storm in the Atlantic, cruise lines are scrambling to keep passengers safe while adjusting itineraries.
By Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at least 21 cruise ships across nine major brands have been forced to change course, cancel ports, or even delay sailings altogether.
Wide-Ranging Impact
The storm has disrupted itineraries from Bermuda to Puerto Rico to the U.S. Virgin Islands, with ripple effects reaching as far as Canada.
Some ships are swapping Caribbean ports for Mexico, while others are rerouting to northern destinations like Halifax and Saint John.
Disney Cruise Line
- Disney Treasure – Originally sailing an Eastern Caribbean route with Tortola and St. Thomas, the ship shifted to the Western Caribbean, now visiting Cozumel, George Town, and Falmouth. The stop at Castaway Cay remains on schedule.
Carnival Cruise Line
- Carnival Elation – Skipped Half Moon Cay due to rough seas for tender boats; diverted to Freeport instead. Still scheduled for Celebration Key on Aug. 21.
- Mardi Gras – Rescheduled Grand Turk visit from Aug. 18 to Aug. 19.
- Carnival Vista – Visited Nassau on Aug. 19 instead of Half Moon Cay.
- Carnival Sunshine – Canceled Bermuda stops (Aug. 20–21). Now sailing to Celebration Key and Nassau before returning to Norfolk.
- Carnival Venezia – Canceled calls to St. Thomas and San Juan. Now calling at Celebration Key on Aug. 23; Grand Turk on Aug. 25 remains unchanged.
Royal Caribbean

- Utopia of the Seas – Skipped Nassau (Aug. 19) for a sea day.
- Symphony of the Seas – Canceled Nassau call (Aug. 20) and spent the day at sea.
- Liberty of the Seas – Dropped Bermuda; rerouted north for an overnight call in Halifax, Canada.
- Vision of the Seas – Canceled Bermuda overnight; visiting Port Canaveral, Nassau, and Perfect Day at CocoCay instead.
- Harmony of the Seas – Replaced Perfect Day at CocoCay with a sea day.
- Freedom of the Seas – Skipped Nassau (Aug. 17) and returned to Miami early (Aug. 18).
MSC Cruises
- MSC World America – Scrapped calls to Puerto Plata (DR) and San Juan (PR). Instead, heading to Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico. Visit to Ocean Cay is still scheduled.
Norwegian Cruise Line
- Norwegian Gem – Delayed embarkation for its Aug. 22 sailing from Boston to Aug. 24; canceled call at Sydney, Nova Scotia.
- Norwegian Aqua – Bermuda sailing rerouted to Canada, with a call at Saint John.
- Norwegian Jewel – Cut its Bermuda overnight short, leaving a day early.
Holland America Line
- Zuiderdam – On its transatlantic voyage, it canceled St. John’s, Newfoundland, replacing it with an overnight stop in Halifax, Canada, before continuing to Boston.
Princess Cruises
- Enchanted Princess – Swapped Dominica and St. Maarten for Martinique and St. Kitts.
- Island Princess – Docked in Brooklyn through Aug. 22 (delayed departure). Will add an extra day in Bermuda, but canceled Grand Turk, Amber Cove, and San Juan.
Celebrity Cruises

- Celebrity Beyond – Skipped Perfect Day at CocoCay on Aug. 19 and spent the day at sea.
Virgin Voyages
- Valiant Lady – Replaced Puerto Plata with Cozumel, Mexico, continuing her Caribbean sailing as planned.
Safety Comes First
Cruise lines continue to coordinate with port authorities and fleet operations centers as Hurricane Erin moves along its track.
While some guests are disappointed by missed ports, most agree that safety at sea takes priority.
With the storm still active, more itinerary adjustments may be announced in the coming days.
