What was meant to be a day of fun in the sun turned tragic on Friday when two American passengers from Carnival Cruise Line ships drowned in separate incidents at Celebration Key, the company’s brand-new private destination in the Bahamas.
What Happened
According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force and Carnival, both incidents took place on August 8, 2025, within hours of each other.
- The first case involved a 79-year-old man snorkeling at the beach. Witnesses say he became unresponsive in the water. A lifeguard pulled him out and performed CPR, but he was later pronounced dead by a doctor.
- Just after 2:30 p.m., police responded to a 74-year-old woman who lost consciousness while swimming in a lagoon-style pool. Again, a lifeguard attempted CPR, but she too was pronounced dead.
Neither victim has been publicly identified.
Carnival’s Response

Carnival confirmed that the man was sailing on the Carnival Elation and the woman on the Mardi Gras, with both guests traveling alongside their families.
“Our lifeguards and medical team responded to two separate emergency incidents at Celebration Key on Friday — one in the lagoon and one at the beach. Sadly, both guests have passed away,” Carnival said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the guests and their families, and our Care Team is providing assistance.”
Police Investigation
Bahamas authorities noted that autopsies will be performed to determine the exact causes of death.
At this stage, both cases remain under investigation, but police reports confirm initial findings of drowning.
Celebration Key: Carnival’s New $600 Million Playground

Opened in July 2025, Celebration Key is a $600 million private destination built exclusively for Carnival guests on the south side of Grand Bahama Island.
The resort features:
- Multiple lagoon pools
- Expansive white-sand beaches
- Restaurants, bars, and retail shops
- A water park and family-friendly attractions
- Live entertainment and music venues
The pier was designed to host two of Carnival’s largest ships at the same time, bringing thousands of guests ashore daily.
Friday’s tragedies mark the first major safety incidents reported at the destination since its debut.
A Somber Reminder
While drowning incidents at cruise line private islands are rare, they serve as a sobering reminder that water activities — even in controlled resort settings — carry risks.
Carnival emphasized that lifeguards responded quickly in both cases, but survival outcomes were not favorable.
For now, the cruise line and Bahamian authorities continue to investigate while providing support to the affected families.
